    Lesson #1

    April 4, 2021

    Their Eyes Were Opened

    Lesson Passage:

    Luke 24:13–16, 22–35

    NRSV

NOW on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem,

14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened.

15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them,

16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

22 Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning,

23 and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.

24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him."

25 Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared!

26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?"

27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on.

29 But they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over. So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.

31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight.

32 They said to each other, Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?

33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together.

34 They were saying, The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!

35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

    Today’s Lesson Story

By the time of today’s lesson, Jesus had died and been resurrected on the third day, just as He had promised. However, disbelief and confusion had set in among His followers. Was Jesus actually raised from the dead? Was Jesus really who He said He was? Jesus’ followers knew that Jesus was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people, but they were puzzled about the things they had seen and heard. In this story, Jesus appears before two of His followers on the road to Emmaus and proves that everything He had promised had come to pass. Might we, too, on this Easter day, reflect upon the Resurrection and the power of Who He is!

It was the third day after the crucifixion, and two of Jesus’ followers were on their way to a village called Emmaus. The two were talking amongst themselves about the events that had occurred in the city. As they walked, a visitor met them on the road and traveled along. The visitor was Jesus (resurrected), but the men did not recognize Him. Jesus engaged the men in conversation by asking why they were so sad. One of the two was Cleopas, he shared with Jesus the account that the women had told them. Cleopas told the visitor (Jesus) that the women had gone to the tomb early that morning, but they didn’t find Jesus’ body. Instead, they saw a vision of angels that proclaimed to them that Jesus was alive.

Then, Jesus said to them, How foolish you are! He asked them why they were so reluctant to believe all the prophecies that had been foretold. He reminded them that the Messiah had to endure all manner of suffering to be able to enter His glory with the Father. Jesus challenged their understanding, using the scripture that had been recorded by the Old Testament prophets. Surely, the two men were amazed at the visitor’s knowledge of the scriptures, but they were still unaware that the person they were walking with was Jesus.

When they arrived at Emmaus, Jesus continued to walk further, as if to pass by the village. Yet, the two men had been so comfortable talking with Jesus that they encouraged Him to continue with them. They said, Stay with us . . . It was getting dark, nearing evening. The day was almost over, so, Jesus accepted their invitation. At the home where they settled, the two men and Jesus sat down to eat. At the table, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, broke the bread, and began to give the pieces to those at the table. Suddenly, the eyes of the two men were opened! They had seen this man break bread before! In an instant, they realized that the visitor they had met on the road was Jesus! Then, just as quickly as they had recognized Him, Jesus vanished from their sight. The men were
