About this ebook

In a far-off land, a distant village is about to hold its annual coming-of-age ceremony. Everyone must complete the ritual, and almost everyone is happy about it. At least that's how they act. But is it all worth it? And what lies in the tall grass?

    The Tall Grass

The forest awaits us all. We enter, most return; we still speak of it with the pride of children. Do we say anything true? The fear makes me tremble.

When I step through my village's mud lanes with its stunted hutches, I see the molding on their thatched roofs and know their dirt floors. Scarred men and women limp along on tired limbs. The lucky ones. The ones who came back.

My son is striding toward me. Tuck is tall and lean, straight-backed with an extra spring in his step today. He bounces. The sun shines down, and his skin glows. Everything seems possible. Two of his friends flank him with the same cocksure stride of boys too ready for manhood. Thirteen, all of them, I realize. Today will be the last day they walk so confident.

All three carry wooden spears, hand-carved and painted with care. Traditions. The process takes months, and each spear takes on the personality of the carver, its wielder. My son adorned his with a ruffle of peacock feathers just above the top handhold.
