- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Summary: There once was an old lady who began by swallowing a fly. So she kept on swallowing different animals to catch the animals she swallowed before. Finally, she swallowed a horse and died.Personal Reaction: There was a little boy behind the scenes reporting the animals the old lady swallowed. The rhythm you read the book to is so much fun for the kids.Classroom Extension: 1. Use the repetition in the book to get the kids to read along with the teacher.2. Have the students write their own behind the scenes report about any story they want.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Summary:This story illustrates the traditional tale of an old woman who eats a series of things, beginning with insects and then works her way up the food chain to counteract each previous thing she had eaten (first she ate a fly, then a spider, a cat, a dog, etc.) until she finally dies because she had eaten so much.Personal Reflection:While the retelling and illustrations were well-done in this rendition of the story, I personally found the entire story to be completely horrifying. Classroom Extension Ideas:-This book could be used in a health lesson, discussing the downfalls of gluttony.-The items the old lady eats move along the food chain and could be used to open a lesson on that concept.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5In this story, a kid knows an old lady who swallowed a fly and doesn't know why she did it. The old lady keeps eating animals to eat the animal she ate before. For instance, she ate a bird to eat the spider that wiggled and jiggled inside her. The last animal she eats is a cow and then she dies. I will definately have this book in my classroom because it is silly and very boy appropriate. In the classroom, I would not show my students the pictures and I would have them draw the old lady at the beginning and end of the story, then show them the pictures;I would also have them guess what she will eat next. Another idea is to read the whole series of I Know an Old Lady.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5In this book, an old lady eats a fly. After she eats the fly she decides to eat many more animals. By the end of the story she has eaten so many animals that she dies.I like this book because when I was in elementary school my teacher read this book to me. Another reason why I like it is because of the almost song sequence that it has in it.In the classroom after we have read the book, I would teach them about the different kinds of animals that the lady ate. I would also have the children write their own ending to the story to see what they think will happen.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5In this book an old lady swallows a fly, and we don't know why. She then swallows a spider to catch the fly. She continues to swallow larger items to catch the smaller items, but of course it doesn't work and she dies. This book reminds me of my childhood. When I was in kindergarten my music teacher had a game we played with this song. I must have loved it because I still remember it clearly many years later. I would make life size figures of the items the old lady swallowed. I would have each one of my students hold one of the items and as we read the story they could place their item in a life size figure of an old lady. They will think it is funny and they will also get to experience shared reading.
