For my Hamlettes
Chapter
1
Jesse pulled up to the curb in front of Kevin’s house to find him already waiting. At least, he assumed that was Kevin. All he could see of him were a bulging backpack, a pair of army boots, and sturdy-looking cargo pants. Kevin’s face was barely visible between the sleeping bag and tackle box squeezed in his arms. He looked like he was prepared for a trek into the jungle rather than the long weekend at Jesse’s cabin they had planned.
Jesse cracked a smile as he popped the trunk for Kevin to load up his gear. When everything was stowed away, Kevin climbed into the passenger seat and they took off.
What’s all the stuff for?
Jesse asked as he followed the line of traffic out of Kevin’s neighborhood to the main highway.
Camping,
Kevin said, grabbing a cookie from the pile of snacks sitting between the front seats.
You know we have a cabin, right?
Jesse asked. You didn’t need your sleeping bag.
Kevin shrugged. I thought we might want to sleep outside.
Jesse shuddered at the thought. He loved going to the cabin. But he loved it in the same way he loved any vacation: done comfortably. And with beds.
So, what exactly are we going to do this weekend?
Kevin asked.
We can do anything we want. When I go up with my brother we usually just hang out and watch TV or play games.
Kevin laughed. That’s what we do basically every weekend. I was hoping to do something more outdoorsy since we will be, you know, in the woods.
We share a lake with a few other cabins, so we can go out on the boat or do some fishing. And there are hiking paths, if that’s more what you were thinking,
Jesse offered without much enthusiasm.
That sounds great,
Kevin said. He paused thoughtfully before adding, Before we moved here we lived about half an hour from a state park. My dads and I used to go camping—like, in-a-tent-with-no-running-water kind of camping—practically every other weekend from spring to fall.
Jesse was surprised he didn’t know this about his friend. He hadn’t really thought much about what Kevin’s life used to be like before he had moved to town at the beginning of the school year. The two were in most of the same classes together, they both played on the soccer team, and they even went to the same synagogue. They became friends pretty fast. But Kevin had never talked much about his past. Jesse had assumed it had been pretty much the same as it was now.
No wonder he was so excited to go on this trip, Jesse thought. But he’s going to be disappointed if he thinks I’m going to spend all weekend doing that nature stuff.
"I guess we could do a
