When people ask me what I’m so happy about, my immediate response is, ‘I woke up this morning’. It may sound a bit overdone but it just happens to be true. I think I’m the luckiest man I know.I’ve had (and am still having) a life full of rich and different experiences. Lucky not to die in the underwater caves of South Australia, prawn boat deck hand on Australia's Barrier Reef, an AFS volunteer working with exchange students from many different countries, flying hangliders 12,000 feet above the Australian outback, getting frightened fighting bushfires, teaching English in Thailand and South Korea and time as a Buddhist monk in rural Thailand are just a few off a list I almost can't believe myself.Through all this, I have developed a passion for bringing people of different cultures together. It is only through learning about each other that we come to understand that, though we may be different in many ways, we are all the same human beings underneath. We all laugh and cry, we all bleed the same colour blood when cut, we all need food and we all share this beautiful planet.Let us hope that through understanding, we can attain the tolerance required to help make this world a better place. My writing allows me to explore ideas, emotions, people, relationships and occasionally morality. Although I have been told I shouldn’t, I jump the boundaries between children’s books, adult fiction and poetry. I am much more comfortable with things that set us free rather than those that limit expression.I write for the simple pleasure of it, though also in the hope that some of my scribble might inspire someone, somewhere, to work, in some small way, towards making a better world for our children.

    About the Author

    The First Dinosaur

It all happened a very very long time ago, in a place called Pangaea. It was a time before people, a time even before birds, although there were fish in the water and many different types of lizards on the land. There were also very big scary things, a bit like crocodiles. Some lived in the water just like crocodiles do, but some lived on land.

The very first dinosaur looked out from behind a large rock. His family name was Nyasasaurus and he wasn't very big. It had taken quite a long time, but the Nyasasaurus family had changed from being big lizards to being small dinosaurs. They weren't tiny, tiny small. Their bodies were about as big as a dog, though they did have very very long tails and long necks. This one was a boy, and because we don't know if he had a real first name, we'll call him Nya.

Nya blinked several times, then looked around for something to eat. There wasn't much.

    Can't see anything to eat.

His sister was standing behind him. We'll call her Nyo.

She poked her head around the rock too.

Must be something somewhere. She pushed him a little, and pointed with her nose. What about over there?

The ground was dry and not much grew. Nyasasaurus like to eat lots of different things, insects, small lizards, plants, and fish, when they could catch them.

Nya moved forward just a little, so he could see better.

We could try the river, but it is dangerous.

Carefully checking there was no danger, Nya came out from behind the rock and headed for the river.

'A juicy fish would be nice. Just have to be careful around the water. We don't want to become someone else's meal!'

His sister followed close behind him, not saying anything.

Being the very first dinosaur was good, because it meant the big dangerous T Rex and other big hungry dinosaurs hadn't arrived yet.

Being small was also good in some ways. It was easy to hide behind rocks. It also meant they didn't need to find a lot to eat. A small lizard, a group of crunchy insects, or a nice plant with bushy leaves was all that was needed.

Being small also had a big disadvantage. Even though there were no T Rex yet, there were lots of other big animals, with big teeth, that would be very happy to have a meal of tender Nyasasaurus.

It wasn't just one animal they had to look out for either. There were lots of different ones. Prestosuchus, Batrachotomus, and Saurosuchus were just some of the big archosaurs, with terrible jaws that roamed the land.

It was just as well that Nyasasaurus’ could run fast.

Nya scampered from rock to rock towards the river, his sister right behind him. He was nearly there, then saw a small bush with soft juicy leaves. Perfect, it was very handy being to
