About this ebook

After a freak accident killed his wife and son, Pritchard slipped into alcoholism to drown his sorrows at a blue-collar bar nearby to avoid the dead and empty house. But then a teenage girl asked for his help, and it turned his entire existence around.

One thing's a turf war going on. Another is being a benefactor, which is very much similar to Pritchard's vigilante angel side. So, when one of the men who saved Pritchard's ass from a bad plan asks for a favor to save his sister, Pritchard immediately jumps on board to be useful to a battered mother and her children. Ending up with a bag full of illegal ammo was not part of the plan, though.

In the meantime, The Bogdan gang keeps coming, and Pritchard has to learn new skills to live up to his responsibilities while getting his point across to those who seek to take over his town.

Reaching out to an old nemesis is but part of the problems Pritchard has to tackle. Passing the one-year date of losing his wife and son weighs heavily, too.

There's a balance to be found, and that bag of armor-piercing bullets isn't helping.

    Day 35

AGAIN, TREVOR’S RESTAURANT was full, but the mood was very different from the last time when it had been the frame for the welcome home party. Due to the turf war, guards were stationed outside in different locations, and Joseph had even told Pritchard and Cat that he’d hired a team of mercenaries to keep them safe.

It was a bunch of old SEALs, who Trevor would wine and dine until they thought they’d ended up in Paradise at the end of their run.

Joseph had apparently gotten the idea from Pritchard pulling in Sam. Either that or the sniper team that had saved Pritchard, then Cat and the others on their way home to Glens Falls. Pritchard still wasn’t sure Joseph knew the details, considering Trevor had said for Pritchard to tell it, and the time hadn’t been right so far. It certainly wasn’t right tonight.

This time, the party was all family—kids running around the place, toys being tripped over, booboos to be kissed, and ice cream down the fronts of dresses. It was family chaos, and it hurt Pritchard as much as he relished in the atmosphere. Especially because of how close to the year-date it was since he’d lost Monica and Zack.

Only Trevor and Joseph had mentioned it, hugging Pritchard extra tight.

Pritchard wanted to drink himself into oblivion, but he had responsibilities now. Too much to let himself be pulled under by emotions. Instead, he tried some of the tools the grief counselor had provided him with. He wasn’t impressed with all of them, and he even figured that was why he’d been taught multiple different ones.

Duncan and his family were there, too, and Pritchard couldn’t help but smile at the thought that maybe, just maybe, that family could have what had been stolen from Pritchard by a truck. Maybe, just maybe, Duncan would end up the one with the dad-belly, joining neighborhood watch, and carpooling the kids to boxing practice or whatever.

He’d love to be able to swing that. Also, it reminded him he had a family in the Bronx to take care of. So far, he and Cat had decided to do it the following evening, giving Alex some time to see what online information he could find. So far, it hadn’t been much. The wayward cop, Julian, had pulled domestic disturbance calls or other ways the police had been notified, and there were all of six. Including one from a kid’s school, wondering about bruises on the oldest kids’ arms.

While the kids at the party were up, Hemish told fun stories. When the last person under the age of fifteen had turned in or left, Hemish rolled into other stories. And he was wearing a kilt, just like Rose had warned he would.

Rose was part of one of the tools the shrink had taught Pritchard, and he stayed close to his girl, enjoying her company and focusing on gratitude at having her in his life.

Frank was his happy drunk self, and he taught a few to play the dice game, seven, that they always played back at Sam’s. It even turned out Sam was pretty good at it—especially since he indulged in alcohol that evening. It being mostly a game of luck, and the rest was knowing when to hold.

Unlike what Pritchard had feared, Frank wasn’t a boastful drunk. He even managed to hear half of Frank’s story about how they ended up there. Papa Pritchard had saved his girl. Papa Pritchard took care of things. Papa Pritchard was a true friend. And Papa Cat helped teach Rose to take on the world. Well, Frank worded it differently, but anyone knowing Cat as a coach knew that that was always the goal with a student who took to his teachings.

A few drunk man’s tears from overly drunken emotions followed that, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing in his circles. It made Frank look a pitiful fool and Pritchard and Cat the kindhearted benefactors.

    Win, win.

Cat stayed close to Sally, and Pritchard enjoyed seeing that their banter had at least leveled out, and she no longer seemed to think him a womanizing asshole. All the time, at least. But they definitely weren’t where Cat wanted to be, that much was obvious, too, yet he
