Jesus and John Thornton - Ross Thompson
PART ONE
The painting is on my bedroom wall, so it is the first thing I see when I wake in the morning. It is a John Atkinson Grimshaw painting. A dark bleak Victorian street around midnight. The moon is barely seen through the thick dark clouds. The small amount of moonlight reveals a light mist of rain falling. Mist surrounds the dark silhouette of a house on a hill above the street. It reminds me of the title of Charles Dickens novel -Bleak House. It is cold and miserable. A shiver runs through me each time I view the painting. A single figure is making their way through the shadows along the edge of the road. It is too dark to make out if it is a man or a woman. Lonely silence fills the painting. You know the only sound will be the figures footsteps echoing in the night, and you wonder why anybody would be out at that hour, on such a wretched night. I look at that painting every morning and I think to myself ‘I’m that figure’. I know it is not healthy thinking that way, but that is how I feel.
My name is John Thornton, and as you can tell I have a few things weighing heavy on me. I am 25 years old and a Christian. I have been a Christian seven years. I think it was enthusiasm that got me through in the first few years after receiving Jesus. I know it was disappointment that started the negative cycle I find myself in now.
The problem can be summarised in one small three letter word. Sin. I just cannot seem to beat it. Each day is a constant struggle to ward off unclean thoughts and feelings. When you are battling personally with sin, it is harder to deal with the uncleanliness you inevitably come face to face with
