    Amournful whistle overpowered the small apartment kitchen. Cleveland rushed around the kitchen island to unplug the kettle.

    We should probably get a new one of these, he said. One that turns off by itself.

    And I’d like to have a bath without it draining before I’m done, Tara said.

    Cleveland sighed. It drains pretty slow. You almost don’t even notice.

    Then I’m left naked in an empty tub, like a dead fish.

    And what a good catch you are!

    Cleveland pulled her close. She turned away from him to her sea-green work bag on the counter. He kissed her neck as she stepped back.

    Matthew would fix the tub, wouldn’t he? Our rent is always on time.

    I kinda want you out of these scrubs.

    Cleve, I need to get to work.

    Do they need you as bad as I need you?

    Cleveland. Her tone was not playful; her shoulders curled in, tense with annoyance.

    Sure. Here’s your tea and water.

    Tara took the small stainless-steel thermos but left the plastic water bottle on the counter. She scowled across the one-bedroom apartment toward the living room window.

    Dark when I leave, dark when I’m back. Life sucks right now. Two more days.

    She gave him a reluctant kiss.

    Tara, you’ve got to join our company. I’ve always said iOcean’d probably hire you in a heartbeat. The ocean energy research and development company was 9-years-young and expanding at the rate of a tidal wave.

    I prefer working with people, not a laptop. She went out the door without looking back at his meek smile.

    A tablet, he said as she left the apartment. I usually use a tablet.
