About this ebook

Ever bitter from the tumultuous end to his marriage, Sylrad, the devil minstrel, roams Kiyamol singing songs of heroes and villains, of dragons and witches, of lovers and loss. The incubus flits from village to village, feeding off of anyone who will have him, but unable to bring himself to settle back down with another lover. Even a million years of healing had never been enough for Sylrad until he found Aidea, a roaming faery researcher whose careful and meticulous affections fill the aching hole in the devil's heart.

    CHAPTER ONE

A bard's life wasn't one of particular glamour, the way some people seemed to consider it. It was one marked by tireless work at perfect one's craft and then a constant requirement of upkeep of one's related skills. That didn't even delve into the necessity of performance -- continuous performance -- to continue to have a roof over one's head and food on the table.

As Sylrad gently plucked at the strings of his lyre, trying to compose a new song he could play, he couldn't help but think of how silly one had to be to believe that his life was one of fame and fortune. His songs were sung far and wide, yet no one credited him or knew his name. Sylrad was sure, in fact, that should his involvement become known, his songs would soon fade into obscurity. The humans had taken a shine to his work, having heard it from many an orc or an elf, but none knew that the real source of those songs was none other than Sylrad, the devil bard, the Sixth Ambassador of Hell.

The devil couldn't help but smile to himself, curling his tail around his legs as he sat in the grass composing what he could only hope would become a beautiful, yet tragic ballad to the singer's one true love. How silly mortals were, thinking that a person could have 'one true love' destined by fate. Still, Sylrad wasn't about to complain about the structures that often paid for a roof over his head.

Sylrad lay his lyre down in his lap and stretched his tired arms over his head, looking up into the clear blue sky. There were still many hours left in the day, but there was no reason for the devil to spend it sitting out in the forest alone. He'd soon become hungry if he didn't at least consider finding a person to feed off of. He closed his eyes, trying to remember where he was. He wasn't a God, so he had to keep track of his location the old-fashioned way.

Wow, fancy meeting you in a place like this. A sweet voice came from behind the tree Sylrad was leaning on. He craned his neck back to see the source of the sound.

Hello, Adia, Sylrad said curtly, Fancy meeting you in a place like this, He said as he put his lyre in its case and latched it shut loudly. Adia stepped out from behind the tree.

No need to be so cold, Sylrad, Adia said, brushing a long lock of black hair behind her ear. Sylrad grimaced as he stood up from where he sat, taking a step away from her.

I'm needed elsewhere, He said, turning his back to Adia, I have a date.

With whom? Adia asked sweetly, keeping pace behind Sylrad. Sylrad scoffed.

Anyone besides you, He said, not turning to look at her. She huffed, clearly upset by his refusal to engage her.

I said I was sorry! She said exasperated. Sylrad finally turned back to face her, seething with literal flames in
