Mick Watson has just got out of jail. He had spent three years on a charge of manslaughter for killing his best mate Robert Fisher. He has a slight limp, reminding him of the horror smash that put him in hospital for two years.
The car he was in was racing down a cliff edged road when it skidded and rolled down the side hitting a tree. Both occupants were thrown out.
Robert, Robbo to his mates, clung to life for four days. Unconscious. His body twisted and broken.
Mick, who returned a blood alcohol level above the legal limit for his age, was in a coma for several weeks. He woke to be charged with manslaughter.
The trial was over in no time. Mick pleaded guilty. Speaking to no one throughout.
After leaving prison yesterday, Mick visited Robbo’s grave and then his parents home where the action of Sunset BBQ is set.
Anger, agony, reminiscences and remorse are exposed in the duel that follows. But it keeps coming back to Mick having killed Robbo.
Mick feels that he can tell the truth about the accident, that he wasn’t driving the car. It’s a truth that Robbo’s father, Bob, has trouble with.
Mick talks about what they were doing up the mountain and where they were headed.
Mick and Robbo had a thing at the sunset that night. A thing that didn’t go as Robbo planned … and tragic consequences followed
