About this ebook

There's always been something wrong with me but I'm not sure what.

I've had daydreams of angels since I was a child, specifically a guardian angel to rescue me from my addicted mom, nonexistent father, and friendless existence.

You see, there's a mystery surrounding my birth. One that mom won't talk about. One that keeps her checking out every single February 2nd...that's my birthday, but from her behavior, you'd think it was doomsday.

I've always known something was missing. Like there's a hole in my heart that needs... That's the thing. I don't know what it needs but it's left me feeling unworthy of love at all.

But now odd events are happening. Like visitations from a robin, visions I can't explain, and an out-of-body experience—if that's what it really was. I'm starting to question everything. What secrets have my parents been keeping? Who am I, really? And could I be worthy of love in more ways than I ever imagined?

If Angels Whisper is an emotional, heartfelt short story (approx. 10,000 words) with fantasy realism and spiritual elements.

    If Angels Whisper

MOM SAID THAT, ON THE night I was born, an angel whispered my name in her ear. Amanda, the angel had whispered, and Amanda my mom had named me.

But hours before I was born, a bitter storm had blown in from the Pacific—before Mom ever felt the first pangs of labor or heard the angel. First sleet, then snow. Winter’s frosty breath layered the ground, and all living things hid beneath the February storm’s fury. Gray clouds blanketed the skies, so thick that no sunlight leaked through. On the rare occasions Mom told me of the terrible storm, I imagined that somewhere, up there, beyond the darkening sky, sunlight waited to return. Waited for spring. Waited for lengthened, lazy summer days when it could gleam down on waves of wildflowers with their cheerfully colored faces turned upward to the light.

But the sun never shone in February. At least not on my birthday.

Did you see the angel? I asked Mom when I turned ten—a bean vine, gangly thing— and by then, I really wanted to believe in angels. Perhaps my angel was an actual guardian, and she’d return to rescue me.

    No.

How did you know it was an angel?

Tinkling... Little jingle bells... Mom mumbled before passing out, an empty bottle of Demerol still wrapped in her veiny grip. A blue feather rested on her chest, wavering with the in and out of her breath. It always lay there when she was like that. Especially on my birthday.
