    Throwing the last of the wet clothes into the plastic laundry basket, Taylor hoisted it onto her hip, tucking a strand of shoulder length black hair behind her ear. Stepping away from the washing machine, she reached for the back door. She was going to be late to school, but if she didn’t get them hung out, her mum was sure to ground her and she wouldn’t be allowed to go to the beach tomorrow. A Saturday stuck at home had to be the worst thing in the world. Especially in summer.

    The door swung shut behind her as she hurried down the concrete path, putting the basket on the ground beneath the hills hoist clothesline. About to reach for the first garment, Taylor stopped. At the far end of the backyard was a hat, resting against the shrubs that lined the back fence.

    She straightened, her brown eyes searching the area. Everything else looked as it always did. The jacaranda tree in the far corner had a carpet of lavender blue beneath it, from fallen flowers, the garden beds along the back of the house were a jumble of colours and the timber garden shed halfway along the left side of the yard still needed painting. She had no idea how the hat had ended up in their yard. Maybe it had blown over the fence from the parklands behind them. There was no breeze at the moment, but that didn’t mean there hadn’t been one earlier. She was tempted to leave it, but guessed she better do something about it.
