About this ebook

Join Nunu, whose love for Oros almost leads to her death when a woman by the name of Makhazi, poisons her at the funeral of her dear grandmother, Dorothy, Nomampondo Pinini. After the burial, she sits silently at the back of her father's vehicle, listening to her mother, Mandiks telling Robert, about tales of Speelman's Forest. Here then, the old, old tale of the three witches who occupy Speelman's Forest in the hinterland of Cofimvaba, in the rural Eastern Cape Province. They have mastered the art of defying gravity as they soar to the moon at the stroke of midnight using a rose-gold locust made of metal. They own a cobra snake each, have befriended a werewolf which howls at the moon, and they control the patent to an elixir which guarantees eternal life. They voyage either on the back of a baboon; inside or atop a loaf of bread; or, they simply fly off into the galaxy, on a broom. At three in the afternoon each day, passersby can hear the clanking and the clatter of teacups as the ghosts of Mr Speelman and his wife, Pearl - master and mistress of the basement of horrors, return! There's a cute black cat with a pink flower in its mouth and because all its demons have been exorcised, it now guards the Speelman Estate, ensuring that evil and demonic practices are restricted to the haunted house, situated on a dry, caked oasis, deep within the crevices of this notorious forest. The witches who were banished from nearby villages over two hundred years ago, are rumoured to be alive and well and the only people who come into contact with them, are those in search of short-lived wealth and prosperity!

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to my grandchildren, Alix, Qhamani,

Lisakhanya, Likuwe, Ashanti, Maximilian, and Georgia.

It also goes out to all my relatives from Tsomo

    in the Eastern Cape.

A special dedication goes to my late cousin, Sgageni

Pinini, who beguiled me with these

    fanciful tales about Speelman’s Forest.

Cousin, you saved me from Makhazi’s

poisoned, ‘Oros’ potion. Sorry though, that you could

never convince me to play with the

    frogs and the toads!
