About this ebook
My family has been a great influence on my reading & writing my entire life.
Born in a small town in Northern Minnesota during the Great Depression, my 9 brothers & sisters & I grew up in a one-room house.
Mom read to Dad every night by the light of a kerosene lamp.
Our aunt, a teacher & librarian, made sure we received a book for all occasions, with some nonsense.
In this book of poetry, I have drawn from many of my life experiences.
I will always be grateful to friends & family for all their support while instilling the love of reading, writing, & storytelling in me.

That Time on the Mountain
The mountain rose above and away from her,
This young maiden, so used to being alone.
She gardened and picked food from the forest
And asked for nothing but a shack for a home.
Halfway up the mountain, and directly above,
Lived the mountain man, silent, strong, alone.
He lived off the land from his deep dark cave.
He could face where the morning sun shown.
On a sun sparkled day, he went down to her shack.
They quietly met and then bathed in the stream.
She cut back his hair, and he served up a meal.
By first light he was gone, leaving, only a dream.
Time slid past ’til the forest bright-colored its plume
And the maiden caught her first bitter taste of alone.
She packed a small bag and let the rest stay.
She climbed to keep her heart from forming a stone.
They met and they flourished,
One to another, they nourished.
Together they watched the annual visit of a star.
It came with a glow that drew all cold away
And left warmth for them; both within and without.
It left with the rising sun, though they urged it to stay.
As is just the way of it, they loved and turned old,
And just for the fun of it, they dug for gold.
The star’s time came due, and they watched the
Glow come into the cave, then open itself: extolling.
Together they shed their bodies to the cave floor.
Two souls flew, while dancing, into the star: enrolling.
They always knew but had never known,
The destiny they would now be shown.
A Dedication
For the encouragement
There’s a lady living in our house,
Who makes all of it sparkle with life.
The one who has become its very center.
Now. Please, let me introduce my wife.
Though many times we’ve been shaken and tossed
Like dice in a cup.
When we really didn’t know an escape, a direction,
Or which way was up.
We know, as couples too soon find,
That one or the other is doctor told
Of grave illness and uncertain future.
Through it all, both hands we hold.
And thanks, I must give, readily,
For sharing in the daily living,
That stretched for wondrous years
Of mutual taking and happy giving.
We’ve both enjoyed the times
Of which you’ve surely heard
Of days with doing nothing
And resting afterward.
So as gently as a wondrous melody
Caught in mind, repeated through and through,
With a cherished vow, I now repeat:
Phyllis: I Love You.
