Michelle Torez

Hi, I'm Michelle Torez. I write about the things this government don't want me to. I write about people being told by crisis teams to 'get on with it' and disabled people having benefits slashed. This is what’s really going on.Michelle Torez is an established author, artist, musician and mentalhealth campaigner. Her writing style is often described as 'extremely dark, gritty and brutally honest'. When discussing her writing style, she often says ‘I aim to shine light on the dark things that are going on all around us. I don’t write sugar coated shit, I write about the dark side of humanity, about corrupt governments and the things they try ever so desperately to cover up’.Michelle has been homeless, abused, lost loved ones to suicide and even attempted suicide herself. Numerous times she was turned away by UK mental health services at her very lowest and criminalized, sent to prison and even given criminal convictions for ringing her own crisis team. Also, on top of this, after uploading some snippets of her upcoming autobiographical novel based on her horrific life, she was told by the police and a certain NHS mental health trust that they would take legal action if it was published. Yet, despite this, Michelle continues to write this particular book and is achieving her dream of becoming a famous author. She has become an inspiration for many people and is gaining a huge following on her social media accounts. Her debut poetry book 'Broken Doll' was ranked in the top 1,000 for poetry books on Amazon UK due to its brutally raw, eye opening depictions of abuse and suffering in the NHS mental health system.Michelle was born in Hull, East Yorkshire, England and was brought up by her lone father due to her mother having serious mental health problems. At the tender age of twelve following a mental breakdown, Michelle got locked away for a total of eight years in the inhumane mental health system. Michelle states that the worst abuse she has ever endured in her life took place while she was kept locked up for 5 years in ‘Roycroft Clinic’ between the ages of 12 and 17. This was a unit in Newcastle Upon Tyne where she was subjected to both mental and sexual abuse. Michelle had to witness boiling hot water being thrown at children, children being starved, touched sexually and so much more. People even died there due to staff negligence, including a young boy who drowned at sea. The newspaper articles about this scary place are still available to read at the time of this going to print. Type ‘Roycroft Clinic Abuse’ into google if you’d like to read about this. However, despite her horrific experiences, Michelle has gone on to be a successful author and passionate campaigner, spreading awareness of the horrors and injustices that still go on in the system today, in the hope that more people wake up to what is really going on and join the fight to improve the system and stamp out abusers.Michelle currently lives in Leeds, England and is studying for a BA (Hons) in English Literature & Creative Writing with The Open University. She plans to go on to do an MA in Creative Writing at Durham University and is also working on her debut novel which is based on her own horrific life experiences.
