    Chapter One

Several Triceratops dinosaurs stampeded towards Katy, Lee and Tiffany. They stood there in awe as the dinosaurs ran straight past them, trying to escape the Tyrannosaurus Rex that was chasing them.

The dinosaurs' enormous bodies caused a great cloud of dust to fly up around them. Bushes and small trees were trampled into twigs. The friends were literally six feet away from the huge dinosaur feet, as they stood beside some large boulders. Katy snapped a couple of photos as the enormous creatures ran past and off into the distance.

They had gone back in time to the Cretaceous period, using a device called a Portal Travelling System or PTS for short. Katy had found the device whilst digging in her garden, she had gone through a portal where she had met Lee, who also had a PTS, and they were now able to travel to different worlds and dimensions, back through time and even teleport themselves in their own world. Only last weekend Lee had taken Katy on a surprise trip to Paris for their first official date.

That was the most awesome thing I've ever seen! shouted Lee.

That was the most terrifying thing I've ever seen. replied Katy. It makes me so glad I wasn't around when dinosaurs were alive.

"This time-travel thing is amazing. remarked Tiffany. How many people can say they've seen real dinosaurs stampeding up close and watched them being chased by a T-Rex?"

I'm just glad it didn't catch one. I think if I had to watch it kill and eat a dinosaur in front of me, I might've been sick. groaned Katy.

Tiffany rolled her eyes. Oh Katy, they've gotta eat.

I know, I just don't want to watch.

I have to say, I'm not too crazy about the clothes. Tiffany grumbled looking down at herself. They all wore crudely made animal fur clothes and their hair was straggly and dusty. We look like we haven't bathed in months. She smelled her armpit and pulled a face. Smell like it too.

Well, I don't know about you two, but I'm hungry. admitted Lee. Why don't we go back and get something to eat?

Sounds good to me. replied Katy.

Yeah, it's starting to smell a bit farmy around here anyway. added Tiffany swatting her hand in front of her nose. Who knew dinosaurs were so smelly.

Would you like to do the honours Tiffany? asked Lee.

I would love to. she said with a smile and opened up a portal home. She was still fairly new to all this Portal Travelling, so she was making all her early trips with Lee and Katy until she got the hang of it, and had enough confidence to go off on her own.

They went through the portal and found themselves back in Tiffany's bedroom, which was pink and girly. She had furry, lacy and glittery cushions on the bed, and make-up and jewellery on her dressing table.

How about I order pizza for dinner? asked Tiffany picking up her phone, her naturally wavy, long, blonde hair now looked glossy and perfectly styled.

No arguments here. replied Lee. Katy just nodded. Tiffany began to dial.

It wasn't long before they were tucking into the delicious slices of margherita and meat feast pizzas.

Oh, by the way, I have a football game in a few weeks, if you wanna come cheer me on. Lee told them, brushing his dark brown hair out of his face.

I'll be there. Katy said smiling.

I already know, Toby's playing as well. added Tiffany.

Guess we'll see you both there then. replied Lee.

Katy took another bite of her pizza. So Lee? she asked, twirling her long, chestnut brown hair through her fingers. "A while ago, when I was in your room, I happened to notice a wooden box under your bed labelled Gadgets."

Mmm? replied Lee, looking at her and shoving a slice of pizza into his mouth.

"I was just wondering what other types of gadgets you owned, besides the Portal Travelling System." Katy began to munch on pizza as she waited for him to finish his mouthful so he could answer her.

I don't have that many. he began. "I keep a spare PTS, just in case, and I've got an Invisibility Device, which is really cool. You can plug it into your Portal Travelling System, so that when you go through the portal, you are completely invisible to everyone on the other side. Or you can just use it separately and make yourself invisible here."

That sounds awesome! cried Tiffany. Oh, the fun I could have with one of those. A mischievous grin swept across her face.

Yeah, well, it can be dangerous too. Lee continued. For example, you could get run over by a car because the driver couldn't see you. It's like everything, you just have to be careful with it.

What else do you have? asked Katy.

"I have a Shrink and Grow Device. So I can make myself tiny like an ant, or huge like a giant, or anywhere in between."

Katy's emerald green eyes lit up. I would love to be able to shrink down to just a few inches tall and maybe play in my sisters doll's house, or explore the garden outside. You know, just to see the world from another perspective. Katy said with a smile. It could even solve world hunger, you could make people smaller, or make the food bigger, so there was plenty to go around.

Well, I'm not saying it can't be fun, or even useful, but …

Tiffany rolled her piercing blue eyes. Ugh, here he goes again with the warnings. Do you always have to be so serious Lee?

Lee just scowled at her and continued. If you ran into a hungry bird or a large spider for example, being small can suddenly become seriously scary, but yeah, it could be cool making things bigger, like food or even clothes you've grown out of.

Do you use them much? asked Tiffany. I think I'd be using them all the time.

Nah, just now and again for fun.

    Anything else? asked Katy.

The only other gadget I have is still pretty new, I only got it the other day.

Ooh, what is it? asked Tiffany, who liked the sound of all these new gadgets.

"It's a Healing Device. answered Lee. It's supposed to be able to heal you if you cut yourself or whatever, just by pressing it to your forehead. Apparently, it searches through your body, fixing anything that's wrong and knitting skin back together without leaving a scar. The instruction manual says it can even mend broken bones."

    Wow! replied Katy.

I've got to get me one of those. said Tiffany. That's probably the best gadget ever invented.

Have you tried it out yet? Katy asked, taking another bite of pizza.

Only briefly, I had a bruise on my leg and it cleared it up almost instantly. I figured it could come in handy on some of our travels.

Katy couldn't help remembering the fairy world where she had hit her head and Lee had injured his arm. A Healing Device certainly would have come in handy then. She picked up another slice of pizza and bit into it.

The following weekend, Lee was on his way to Katy's house, when a boy walking in the opposite direction, bumped into him. Sorry mate. said the boy.

That's okay. Lee didn't know it at the time, but the boy had pick-pocketed what he thought was Lee's phone and slipped it into his own pocket before hurrying away.

Katy opened the door to Lee. Hi babe.

    Hello gorgeous.

Katy just giggled, making Lee smile. "By the way, Tiffany's here. She wants to see a real live unicorn, but it means going back to that fairytale dimension and visiting The Valley of Unicorns. We were just wondering if you think it'll be safe."

I'm sure it'll be fine, as long as we steer clear of their horns and their hooves. They went inside and Katy shut the door. I'll have a quick look on my device to be on the safe side though.

He reached into his pocket for his PTS. He couldn't find it. He checked his other pockets. That's funny, I could've sworn I picked it up before I left the house.

You can't find your device? Katy asked raising an eyebrow.

I guess I must've left it at home.

The boy who had stolen Lee's device had had every intention of selling it, but as it had no labels or logos on it, he wasn't sure what type of phone it was, to know how much he could get for it.

He leaned against the wall of a dark, damp alley and started flicking through the screens.
