About this ebook
THE LAST YEARS OF HUMAN LIFE ON EARTH
So, it began as a hopeful adventure. Life on Earth emerged. Over the millennia, humans took their place. What according to Darwin started as a one cell entity evolved into a multicell organism. Humans eventually emerged on Earth after a long evolutionary journey. The route was from simplistic to complex.
But would the presence of humans go on to be forever? Alas, here are the details.
Over recent centuries humans were doing quite well. Certainly, they are at the top of the brain chain. Discoveries in a multitude of areas abound. Technology is advancing rapidly and exponentially. What's not going apace is the behavior of humans. Certain inbred characteristics in humans are, to be blunt, quite self-destructive. Firstly, psychologists and psychiatrists have listed 27 personality disorders in the latest Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders. Almost 40% of Americans can be diagnosed with one or more personality disorders. But what may be most concerning is that the number of narcissistic and psychopathic personality disorders is astronomically rising. A new category, malignant narcissistic personality disorder has skyrocketed.
But the list goes on as to the negativity and self-sabotage that infused the human psyche. There have been mass killings, genocide, wars, soaring crime rates, and mental afflictions. On the other hand, there may be some hopeful signs.
How long will human life on Earth survive?
According to some scientists and environmentalists not very long. There is too much resistance to change.
In 2020 life was livable in 2020 in the United States. There was less concern over the environment. As the years rolled by fires hurricanes pollution added to the destruction of the land.
The last years of human life on earth follows the Lichten family over several decades as there is a dissent into the environmental abyss
Attempts were made to protect the citizens. An invention was patented but there were individuals who sabotaged such events. They had a laisez faire attitude- they were called L-Fers. Their view was-“let nature take its course” and nature did take its course .
Once entrenched opinions are formed, no amount of contrary evidence will change one’s mind. This is reminiscent of the 1950’s theory of cognitive dissonance. No matter what evidence is shown, people will maintain their beliefs. Furthermore, there was sweeping plague of malignant narcissism. And so, much of society embarked on a careless attitude.
The land with destroyed, buildings turned into rubble, eventually the electrical grid was dysfunctional. Civilization had regressed back to what would seem like thousands of years ago. How will it all end?

THE LAST YEARS OF HUMAN LIFE ON EARTH
Chapter One
2020
Let's view some of the arguably positive signs of current life on Earth.
There are vacuum cleaner robots that can clean a house. Food can be prepared by outside distributors and sent directly to your house. So it would seem life is less complicated. There is more leisure time. But alas, that is not the case. Bureaucracy has taken a stranglehold on personal finances just to give one example. To prepare for retirement, there are many decisions to be made. One could put $5,000 here and $1500 somewhere else. There are special accounts, rules, and several contingencies that are considered. It may take about three or four hours to ascertain the best approach.
The freeways in the 1970s were quite efficient. With the increase in vehicles on the road, the average speed is about 20mph almost every hour except for 2:00 am. The attempts to open up the roads have been quite feeble. The backlash against any restrictions is so strong, that nowadays there are none. Any driver with one person in the car can be on the freeway. There is no end in sight. People want freedom or at least freedom to go almost nowhere quickly on the major highways.
Since not everyone has the luxury of a nice retirement account or can afford hot meals sent to a residence it is not surprising that the crime rate has exponentially exploded. Those who feel left out tend to lash out. Buildings and stores are randomly destroyed. Nonviolent crimes such as fraud and embezzlement, invasion of privacy are off the chart. Neither the police nor the court system can handle a multitude of cases.
A random robbery was about to unfold in Van Nuys, California near the courthouse. James Lichten was on his way to provide representation in a personal injury case. The unique aspect of this matter is that Mr. Lichten put his materials and one of his iconic books inside a titanium briefcase. The latter attracted the attention of a would-be robber. At gunpoint, he demanded Mr. Lichten's wallet. Mr. Lichten started running towards one of the courthouse buildings just off Van Nuys Blvd. As he continued across the street, the briefcase slipped out of his hands and became wedged between two cracks on one of the buildings. With all the noise, the robber just left. But Mr. Lichten was unable to retrieve his briefcase. He
