Whether you listened to him sing "Let it Snow" or watched "Rio Bravo," he had you. Every woman loved him, and every man wanted to be like him.
There was a genuineness about him that exuded an old European charm. Dropping out of high school, working odd jobs, and finally being discovered as a rising star, Dean Martin rose to legendary heights. D
ean Martin, crooner, actor, heartthrob, comedian, and television icon, was the King of Cool. From the Ohio Club circuit to his first famous act in 1946, to his ability to come back again and again, until his death in 1995 he entertained the world in films, on television, and with his immortal music. To this day his songs remain a part of our culture. We’re going to call him Dino because that’s what his friends called him, and Dino had a lot of true friends. An affectionate man, a hugger, a toucher, he would always speak to others with a hand on their shoulder or wrist, paying close attention to their words. He was known to be ceaselessly loyal when it came to friendship, often putting his own job on the line to help the people he cared for.
Dino was an instantly likable fellow; one never had to worry that he would get angry or impatient. Women absolutely loved him but, here’s the funny thing, men did too. They wanted to be like him and be liked by him. Dino was always the one who could diffuse an argument with a joke or keep the hothead in the room under control. Yes, that means Frank Sinatra - more on him later. Nothing could ruffle Dino’s exquisitely pressed feathers. He usually had a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Dino was laid back, witty, clever, adored by those who knew him. He was flawlessly groomed, tuxedo-clad, and completely at home with a band behind him and a club audience in front. A few things were certain: when Dino loved what he was doing, there was no stopping him, and this was a guy who loved to work. His enthusiasm for performing shows in everything he did, except in the few instances when he was no longer happy to be there. Yes, that means Jerry Lewis – more on him later, too.
Dino made a name for himself not only in the entertainment industry but as a fashion and lifestyle icon of the 1950s as a member of Frank Sinatra’s famed Rat Pack, where without effort he was able to fit in with gangsters and politicians alike. The persona he so often portrayed onstage was the always-tipsy swinger, a ladies’ man who could also stumble into a fairly fantastic song whenever the mood struck him. His improvisational skills in comedy, in combination with his unflappable cool with his willingness to be the butt of his own jokes, made audiences love him. He was far from an angel, yet no one seems able to hold a
