Trees - mayar.l benzina

MAYAR. L BENZINA

We see some things to be impossible, only because everything we know is not everything there, but when we realize that everything we know is just a tiny dot in a whole different world of different understandings, different possibilities, then, everything becomes possible.

––––––––

For the past thousands of years, the Earth has witnessed many civilizations and many eras, few were vigorous and of great power, others were despised and weak. Some has been wiped out from the pages of history; and some in our minds still stand as the ones who made the world. We, like many before us, undergo rules; a system. It keeps the rampart of our city from falling to the dimness of the outside world.

These were the words said by the founding fathers when they first built this place; this is the only thing that is going to prevent us from losing the race of survival against nature, they said. Therefore, we made rules, rules some finds them unnecessary, some thinks it is the only way we can survive, but like those who lived before, the founding fathers did not know that no matter what, nature always wins, even BY LOSING.

Our community stands on two indispensable rules, created by the founding fathers three hundred years ago. The first rule; an allegiance in which every citizen, boy or girl, must undergo when they reach the age of fourteen; it is an obligated training in order for us to be able to shield the city and protect it from monsters that existed a long time before us, the training brings out protectors, we call them the guardians. The second rule is the more important of the two; it is what keeps the order of our community. IT IS FORBIDEN TO CROSS THE WALL. As I mentioned before, most of us believe there are monsters outside the wall, but no one has ever dared to cross it, and no one has a wish to do it, and the very few who did, never came back, for what stands beyond, remains a dark riddle to all of us. WHAT WALL? You may ask, well, for years we have lived under the shades of what we called, ADHARA. ADHARA became our world now, and the only life we know.

CHAPTER ONE.

The snow tardily begin to fall, and all the little crystallized flakes held together to finally weave a slender veil that gently covered the bare ground, making the horizon emerge to be an expanded graceful dress. There, on the peak of that hill, was some sort of a strange being, a brown creature with numerous long wrinkled brown arms formed on the upper part of it. Another remarkable thing was the crooked flickering paper hanging from one of the thin arms, hardly holding up, and it has a colour, a colour in which I have never seen before. But despite this beautiful and strong shape, in some manner it appeared to me that this creature was slowly dying.  Suddenly the image turned unreadable and blurred, and the dream started fading as the paper came to fall.

This dream is getting familiar every single night, since it has been chasing me for months now. I never told anyone about it, not even Thomas.

It has been less than a week since I knew I have a grandfather, an outlandish individual in my family I never heard about. I was not startled as I am supposed to be, because for a long time, and for some obscure reasons, I had the firm sensation that I have someone out there I belong to other than my parents, it turned out that my feelings were not false after all. Yet I found it a bit abnormal to hear it from Thomas and not my parents, it is not something you just decide not to tell your own daughter. Every time I try to ask them about it, they seem to find a way to avoid my questions at all costs, it is as if they never wanted me to know that I have a grandfather. And if Thomas did not tell me about it, I never would have known, considering the fact that they were careful about not telling me. Thomas is the only person I trust, we have been friends for most of our brief lives, he is the kindest and most amiable companion I knew. His father Mr. Luke Vandenberg is a member of the city council; he once heard him talking about my grandfather Argus Blue, I knew he is the father of my mother, for they carry the same last name.

I was quite certain that my parents would keep avoid answering my justified questions, and I could not hold my burning curiosity for any longer, so I needed Thomas’ help to find the truth.

What I am going to tell you may sound a bit odd, announced Thomas. Last night, I heard my father talking to Genevieve about your grandfather. (Genevieve Kean is the commander of the city and therefore the leader of the council). When he asked her about what happened to Argus Blue, she said that a long time ago, he did something formidable that lead him to be banished forever from the city to live near the Wall.

No one has ever been banished before, I noted, this is probably why my parents never told me, they were ashamed.

No, that’s not the case, said Thomas. When your grandfather was banished, they deleted every file of him that shows he ever existed before, and they made your parents testify that they never knew him, they did it because he was a threat to society.

A threat... what... He must be feeling very lonely, all these years in isolation, in a remote place where there is no one. I sobbed looking at Thomas when I came up with the most delirious thought, I must go and see him.

Margot, have you lost your mind?, Thomas shouted You can’t do it, you don’t know him, he could be dangerous, this is why they banished him in the first place, besides...he lives near the Wall, the Wall, do you have any idea what is out there.

No, I have no idea, but...

Exactly, no one knows, do you remember what happened before? You cannot go, we have...

Thomas, shhh, I interrupted his overrated concern, I am not going to cross the Wall, I am going near the Wall, and we don’t know if he is dangerous or not, that’s why I am going, to find out about it.

But you don’t know exactly where is he, near the Wall could be anywhere

Yes, this is when your turn comes...I have not even finished what I was about to say and Thomas impatiently interrupted me, My turn? No, no, I am not going to be part of whatever you intend to do, it does not always end well

Please, Thomas, I really need your help!

You always need my help

And you always help me...please?

He took a moment to reply, I can see that he was hesitated, then he said, Alright, but this is the last time I am going to help you break the rules

You know it won’t be the last, I said to him, laughing, but at the same time, worried about what he said, it will not be an easy task.

It is almost the curfew, so when you go back to your dorm, try to search in your computer for anything foreign, like a residence or something near the Wall, he could possibly be living there, said I.

What about you? What are you going to do?

I will tell you whenever I know, see you later.

Wait, what about tomorrow, you cannot miss the first day of the training programme, he remarked in a worry.

I will figure that out when I get to the residence, I said goodbye to him and headed home on my e-scooter before he could ask any more questions. Thomas is not the kind of person who seeks for adventure, actually no one is, not in the city; he always hated to take risks. When we were young ones at the first school, when all the others were learning how to operate on their robots, he was sitting away from
