    1 Last Interview

    Fergus despised jogging, but felt compelled to do it anyway. Fortunately, his morning outing took him down a well-kept tunnel of trees. The cool shadows of the esplanade removed him from a not-so-wide sidewalk full of tardy students and grumpy workers. The twenty-block sylvan side street turn-around gave his extra height a longer view of approaching coeds. He slowed his steps entering the esplanade and headed toward the bricked surface between sidewalks. And there she was, a vision of his dreams; a petite young woman with startling green eyes and long auburn hair. She made eye contact and took his breath away.

    That was one of the good signs, right?

    When she adverted her eyes, he groaned. She was not for him. He was wrong. She stepped behind a large man and vanished.

    Damn. He released the breath he’d been holding like some sappy freshman at his first dance and resumed his slow jog.

    Three blocks later, he saw her again. And she had stopped and was staring at him. At him. She was interested. Or was she?

    A friend had once told him that approaching a woman head-on was threatening, not that his friend had any experience worth mentioning with women, but Fergus didn’t want to miss this opportunity. So just in case, he altered his run to cross her path obliquely and with a slight nod and a mirror-practiced smile, he managed a reedy Hi, he said, as he got closer.

    She blinked. Gotta go. Got things to do before an appointment. Can't be late. I wish there was more time . . . and she vanished once more into the crowd.

    Wished for what?

    After debating whether or not to stop for donuts and realizing he’d be late for his appointment if he did, Fergus hurried back to his apartment to zip through his daily weight training exercises. He practiced his high kick against the heavy hanging bag under the indifferent amber eyes of his black cat, Mordor then dodged the long leather cylinder as it swung to
