    CHAPTER ONE

    Time

    Time is the universal arbiter, endlessly flowing, like the sands of an hourglass. Time is definable, yet impossible to really know. How it affects our lives is all too apparent to see, as the ravages of time take its toll on our physical bodies.

    Are we really even aware of time, in the rush to get from here to there, and the frenzy to grow to be a certain age when we are young?

    Do we even respect time?

    When we are young, time can’t move fast enough, as we watch the clock, counting the seconds until the school bell rings. And again, counting the years until we are a teenager, old enough to drive or fly, able to drink and be considered an adult.

    And then, all too soon, it seems as if time has flown by. Where did it go? Why did I waste all those years? If I only had them to live over again! What would I do with borrowed time?

    Time. We struggle with it, we rail against it, we play ignorant to it. But most of all, we are not a friend to time. Well, at least not a true friend to time, because we are not present to time.

    Usually, because we aren’t present to time, it takes something drastic to wake us up. That’s right, wake us up! Because we are asleep. Asleep in our daily lives, walking like so many insomniacs, going through the motions in our everyday existence.

    There are many instances of men and women getting in a flash, how precious time is. When an accident or a trajedy occurs, or when a diagnosis of limited time remaining for life is to us given by a doctor; or a criminal looking to steal the most precious thing of all. Time.
