About this ebook

Since the beginning of time, mankind has been both befuddled and enthralled by the workings of his/her mind. Though many different styles and lineages of meditation have arisen through the centuries, there is still no consensus on attaining the self-perfected state. Though this book is no guarantee that you will attain this un-contrived state, when used with its complimentary book, Contemplative Meta-Physical Healing, there is the possibility of attaining some sense of relief.

How to Sit- Instructions on Meditation - Tenzin Gyurme

    INTRODUCTION

I have written many books, but none lately. It seems like ages since I sat down to write a book, and for me I guess it has been. Though I don’t decide to actually sit down and write a book, it just sort of comes out. Sometimes with such force that the very energy that the material has gets a hold on me and won’t let me go….. and not always with pleasant affect!

So, the fact that I haven’t written a book for the last few months or so, which might not seem abnormal for most of you; has actually been a blessing for me. For you see, there was a time when the muse had a hold on me, and I was writing a new book every week. That’s right, you heard me correctly, a new book every week.

And to be honest, the process of birthing a new baby every week, and then the process of raising it, editing it, and then publishing every one of these books, has taken quite a toll on me.

(If you go to my website, thezenden.eu and go to the link for the bookstore, you will see some of the books that I have written in the last several years, and if you desire to, you can download 10 of them for free.)

In the process of writing these books, I have introduced the practice of meditation to my readers & students. In fact, I first brought up the topic of meditation in Lightning, An Examination of Energy Fields, and then went a little deeper in Creative Mastery. (both of these books are part of the Mastery Series) Though I mention meditation numerous times throughout the series, I typically referred the reader to outside sources to get their meditation instruction.

Over time, I began writing a series of books that would eventually comprise the Consciousness Series. These books were, Contemplative Meta-Physical Healing, ‘I AM’, In a Post Modern World, and Descent Into Divinity (a restricted text). In Contemplative Meta-Physical Healing, I actually lay the foundation of meditation that is a metaphysically based form of self-healing. In fact, I wound up creating a form of healing based on meditation that I now present in my healing centers in Southern California. This healing modality is called Maitre Healing.

(There is more information about this and other healing therapies and transformation seminars that feature meditation instruction as well, on my website thezenden.eu).

In the appendix’s of Contemplative Meta-Physical Healing, I specifically recommend a type of meditative yoga called an ‘Om-Kar’ Meditation. Also in the appendix of the same book, I include the The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, The Threads of union.

As the result of this book, and of the many students that I have instructed in meditation here in the West, I realize that many of us have misconceptions regarding meditation, and especially have misconceptions regarding Yoga.

So, as the result of a request from a good friend, my birthday buddy, Jesse Campbell, and for the benefit of all beings, I am undertaking to write a pith instruction on meditation for all of those people desiring it. My intention is to clear up any misunderstandings that have arisen on the path for all who are currently practicing yoga.

As I have chosen to remain until all beings have been relieved of their suffering, my wish is that this book will support everyone in attaining that which is your birthright in this dimensional universe: The realization of the divinity within …… the divinity of the Sel!.

As a humble meditator with limited experience on the path, and a solitary realizer without any direct experience of enlightenment, I can only hope to point you in the direction of accomplishment, and illuminate the path that I have tread, albeit in an unskilled way. If, my humble words of encouragement are conflicting with direction or instruction that you find currently working for you, or if you find them to be of little significance to you; it is because of my limited capacity and ability to put into words what is beyond words itself.

I have tried to communicate as best I could the profound realization of my teachers in this text, and any loss of transmission is solely due to my lack of understanding the expanse of their realizations.

I bow down to my teachers, The Vidyadhara Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, his dharma heir Trime Lhawang (Patrick Sweeney) and His Holiness, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa. May their auspicious arising benefit all beings, and may all beings enjoy happiness and the roots of happiness and be relieved of their suffering now and for ever more.

    CHAPTER ONE

    The Truth and Yoga

As I begin this text I am struck with the first lines of Pantanjali’s Yoga Sutras,

Before beginning any spiritual text it is customary to clear the mind of all distracting thoughts, to calm the breath and to purify the heart.
