    Chapter 1

Jack, wake-up it’s time to go, Jack’s mom called from his door way.

Jack had been dreading this day for the past three months, ever since his parents announced that they would be moving from their home in Indiana so his dad could take a job as the newest vice president for Kola Koka headquartered in Atlanta Georgia.  Every day for the past three months Jack had to endure listening to his parents tell him how exciting this move was going to be and how interesting Georgia was since it was so rich in history.  Jack knew his parents were trying to make the move sound better since he would be leaving his group of friends that he had known since he was 5 years old.

Jack stayed still in bed pretending he was still asleep hoping that they wouldn’t have to leave if he never got up.  Jack’s mom came in and sat next to him,

Jack honey, I know you’re awake.  Get up, you’re dad and I have something that we think you’d like for the trip today.

Jack was smart enough to know his mom was attempting to bribe him to get up but Jack still opened his eyes, sat up and asked, What is it?

You’ll have to get ready and we’ll give it to you in the car once we’re on the road. Mom said with a smile.

Jack had been asking his parents for the past month for a Nintendo DS to play in the car.  He had been trying every different tactic known to man, including begging, guilt trip and pouting.  All his friends already had one, but his parents didn’t like anything that didn’t promote education.  Not only did they ban gaming systems at home but they didn’t even have cable and they restricted the amount of time Jack spent on the internet unless it was for educational purposes.  Ever since he could remember his parents told him television and video games would rot his brain and turn him into a mindless zombie.  He would counter argue that all his friends had that stuff and they seemed fine.  His parents would just smile and tell him that he would thank them when he was older.  He was older now and still didn’t feel any sense of achieving the enlightenment that he envisioned his parents hoping for.  That’s why he was so excited that he might actually get something he wanted for once, even if it was at the cost of moving to someplace new.

He pulled himself out of bed, showered and put on his clothes that he had laid out for the trip.  It was going to take about eight hours worth of driving to get to their new home and he wanted to ensure that he was comfortable on the trip.  At least they would be staying the night in Tennessee to break up the trip into two days.  He had his most baggy clothes, sun glasses and his iPod.  The only reason that he had an iPod was because he had shown his parents all the educational podcasts and thought that it would be well worth the cost for their son to broaden his horizons and learn new things.

Jack made his way downstairs to where his parents were finishing with the last minute details of the trip.  His mom was packing a picnic lunch which they planned on eating after they stop to see Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace in Kentucky while his dad was finishing packing the car.  Jack ate a bagel and some yogurt while he waited to leave.  He knew that it would be pointless to try and ask about his present until they were in the car and on their way.

After what seemed like forever the car was finally loaded and they were ready to leave.  Jack took a moment to look at his boyhood home one last time and make a final wish that he wouldn’t have to leave before he got into the car and departed on the newest chapter of his life.

Once they reached the highway Jack’s mom turned around and handed him a wrapped present.

We hope you like it Jack his mom said smiling.

It was about the right size as the DS but when he took it he realized it didn’t feel like a box.  Opening it he already knew that he was going to be disappointed.  It was a book; his parents had gotten him a book about Georgia history including a map with descriptions of the many historical markers throughout the state.  Jack forced a weak smile as he thanked his parents.

His mom could tell he was disappointed and tried to comfort him, Your dad and I thought it would get you excited about the move if you had the opportunity to read up on Georgia history.  Georgia has so much history stemming from the civil war to civil rights that we think you’ll really enjoy it.  Just wait until we get to our new home, it’s an historic home that used to be owned by Archibald Howell.  There is a historical marker just outside our new house.  The marker is even in this book.
