CHAPTER 1
THE REDEMPTION
After two weeks of intense medical examinations Eileen received sad news from her physician about her health condition. Her cancer cells metastasized to her liver and there was no panacea from such an aggressive cancer cells spread. This somber diagnosis would traumatize any human being, but not for Eileen, she was optimistic that she would recover from such a dreadful illness. She ignored her doctor’s diagnosis, who bluntly told her to prepare for the worst. She did not want to believe her prognosis because her outlook in life was full of life ambitions with exiting plans for future achievements. No, no, not under any circumstances Eileen would have accepted and prepared herself to face her final days. Not even her agonizing pain was a testament of her healthcare provider’s candid explanation on the gravity of such illness. The last two weeks of her life she suffered beyond control. She was kept on morphine and other pain killers that helped her to find some relief from her excruciating pain. Still, with all of these obvious fatal conditions, Eileen’s demeanor was not suppressed. Death was not in her mind- on the contrary, she looked forward spending some quality time life in redemption for all her past calamities and misbehaviors.
After her beloved husband Anthony passed way, Eileen moved from Florida to Charleston, South Carolina, with the help of her longtime friend Rose. Life was good; she established new links of friends who knew nothing about her background and her ill-fated past life experiences. Eileen’s ambition was to erase her past events and start a new life without the shadows of her incriminating dark days. She was successfully accomplishing her wishes and gained the confidence of her new church going friends. She became a devoted Orthodox Christian with overflowing ambitions to help the needy and the sick. Her generosity for philanthropic organizations was the conversation among her close friends who assumed that she was financially well off to make such generous financial contributions to benevolent organizations. Others couldn’t understand her spending behavior such as; picking up the restaurant bills when she was out dinning with a group of her church congregation friends. Some thought that Eileen was seeking attention and to gain their friendship or perhaps it was all showing–off her financial status’ all the aforesaid could not be verified by her friends. Eileen’s generosity was engraved by her wealthy family and the way she was accustomed with their elite society. Eileen’s lovers had showered her with extravagant gifts. However, Eileen was never excessive for material things for herself. Though, and at this stage of her life she opted to continue her pretentious wealthy attitude. Whatever was her friends’ reasoning; they embraced Eileen for her openhandedness, for her generous philanthropic acts, her kindness and sometime her humility. This was the second phase of Eileen’s life in which she was seeking redemption for her unscrupulous past deeds. She is to be remembered for her generosity, intellect, charming personality, kindness, humor and as a superb human being with a clandestine and silenced past.
Not one of her friends in her church group had the faintest idea of her history. Eileen was very private about her past memoirs as she remained extremely careful not to reveal any of her long-ago covert operations and her sexual escapades for spy operations.
Eileen repented her life about sixteen year ago when she met Anthony- the love of her life.
In the final hour of her life, Eileen requested to stay at her condominium with nursing care around the clock and with the constant care of her friend Rose. Eileen didn’t want any visitors from her church to see her in the final stage of her life. Not having any relatives alive from her family side, Rose volunteered to call Anthony’s second cousin Joanna, from NJ, to relate Eileen’s terminal illness in the event she wishes to pay a final respect to Eileen. Rose also thought to call a distant friend from NY Francisco and Diane.
CHAPTER 2
THE CONNECTION
Eileen owned and operated a prestigious bed and breakfast establishment. The B&B house was an eighteenth century, six-bedroom, immaculate Italian style house, located between Cooperstown and Oneonta, New York.
A no vacancy sign
was always displayed in the front of the business to deter any undesirable customers. Their affluent and distinguished clientele was registered by referral only.
Eileen and Rose became very close friends from the time they met at the B&B house, they were a perfect much instantly: they both had exquisite taste and were very knowledgeable in all areas of the finer and opulent things in life, right down to the details- Rose had culinary expertise and both she and Eileen were talented and knew how to create a beautifully luxurious environment. They knew how to draw and transact with people of high society. Their business relationship flourished into a great friendship; so much, that they considered each-other as a one happy family!
During the cold upstate winter months, Eileen and her husband Anthony stayed to their summer home in South Miami Beach, Florida, where they both enjoyed the warm climate. Unfortunately, this serene life did not last for a long time as they had to return to NY for medical reasons. Sadly, Anthony died from a heart attack and Eileen sold her B&B place and permanently relocated to her Florida estate. Rose visited Eileen on several occasions and their closeness remained stronger than ever. Eileen was lonely and looked forward Rose’s occasional visit to South Miami. However, the long-distance travel became difficult for both. As time went on, things changed: Rose sold her catering business: her husband retired, and they relocated to Charleston, South Carolina.
The visits to Florida and to South Carolina became more frequent, to a point that Eileen decided she might as well relocate near Rose. She sold her Florida home and purchased a condominium near Rose’s house.
Their unconditional friendship continued to be strong and life was great amid the new friends of the Greek Orthodox Church, where Eileen became a parishioner and a devoted church supporter, proudly telling everyone her Russian Orthodox heritage as she always claimed to be. Eileen’s extraordinary character gained quickly the support of many of the worshipers.
Eileen’s foolish generosity, her pretenses and lies continued to be questioned by several of her new friends but since they had no idea of her past, no one had made any valid derogatory remarks. Eileen’s charitable contributions were beyond logic. Through a mutual friend, we were told at our church that a Greek fellow came to the United States who needed medical evaluation, for apparently to be diagnosed for ALS. His medical contacts in Greece informed him that there is a philanthropic organization at North Carolina Duke’s ALS research center that will provide such diagnostic service at no cost. Unfortunately, this Greek man and his wife were misinformed and that such procedure was told will be cost five thousand dollars. Evidently, this man did not have the moneys to pay for such an exploratory diagnostic procedure. After exhausting all their resources, they were let down and were preparing to go back to Greece to face his death sentence from his devastating illness. When Eileen heard such a conversation among her friends, she felt bad about this family and decided to provide some help. As soon as she searched out and found more information from Duke hospital, she wrote a check to cover all the expenses for the diagnostic test procedures and delivered it to the hospital. Her friends were amazed by such kindness but they did not know what to think! Rose was not surprised, she knew all alone Eileen’s soft touch for people in need.
Eileen’s Boutique
was a yearly church fundraiser totally sponsored by Eileen to show her appreciation to the Greek Church community. At such a successful event, one can purchase high quality linen, silk and many valuable antique collections. This was an extraordinary fundraiser that benefited the homeless.
While living in Florida, Eileen befriended a young family whose parents worked at Anthony’s restaurant in New York. The O’Connor’s lived close by Eileen in a little house inherited by Kate’s mother’s parents. They were working class young people who were struggling with their finances, with a young daughter named Kate. Eileen liked Kate and considered her as her own daughter. She showered Kate with gifts, paid for her private schooling and made sure that Kate had always all the amenities growing-up as a rich little girl from a poor family.
Eileen, quite often did things against Kate’s parent’s wishes, just to annoy them and to establish a closer bond with Kate. She openly declared to the family and friends that one day only Kate would inherit all her wealth. Unfortunately, at the final hour, we learned that these were all empty promises to Kate.
This sort of possessive love
continued even in South Carolina when Kate visited Eileen during the school’s summer vacation. Rose knew all about this situation and she felt uncomfortable from the constant friction between Kate’s parents and Eileen on this matter, but she didn’t want to get involved, thinking that it would cause more harm for the family, and eventually for Kate. Rose was extremely concerned about this gloomy situation but she opted not to interfere in their family’s affairs and with Eileen’s selfish behavior for Kate.
Eileen and Rose have accepted each other as best friends without questioning their past history nor their finances, besides Eileen was a very private person and not interested communicating on personal things. Rose and her husband often questioned among themselves of Eileen’s overabundant generosity, but they had no control over this situation. For all their leisure time expenses with Eileen, they always made sure to pay their own way. They accepted each-other’s friendship without any stipulations. As time went by, Eileen became more dependent and difficult to Rose because Rose was preoccupied with her diabetic mother who was on dialysis for kidney failure. Eileen couldn’t deal with the fact that Rose’s priority was her mother and was spending less and less time with her. Rose detected Eileen’s jealousy but overrode any ill feelings from her good friend.
While their friendship was slowly drifting apart, Eileen had made other friends, as she tried to gain their friendship by entertaining them. Rose maintained her love and cared for her longtime friend Eileen, doing her best to share her time between Eileen and her ailing mother. This was a crucial time for these two friends. Eileen was unapologetic for her selfish attitude and was openly upset with Rose and her husband, who went out of their way to assist Eileen’s relocation to Charleston, helped her with the purchase and renovating of her condominium, and assisted her in every way with her daily activities.
Three years after Eileen had settled into her lovely home, unbeknown to Rose, she called a real-estate agency and put her condo for sale. Prior to that, Eileen was very concerned with an IRS investigation on her Federal taxation. She briefly touched base with Rose on this situation but refrained herself from any details on this subject. She made an appointment with a tax lawyer from New York and asked Rose to drive her there. Her lawyer advised her to pay all the IRS delinquent taxes and put what it is left to a life time annuity income. Apparently, this was catastrophic to her financial independence, who all alone had managed her life with her buying power of her wealth. These were the somber few months of Eileen’s financial disaster. Her monthly annuity income was not sufficient to live the way she was accustomed to. She became unhappy, angry and stressed out. She developed stomach pain for quite some time but refused to see a doctor. She began taking over the counter antacid drugs ignoring the severity of her illness. She finally asked Rose to make an appointment with a gastroenterologist to bring her there. By then, Eileen’s pain was unbearable and merited an emergency room visit to the hospital. Several hours after of an intense diagnostic examination, the doctors admitted her to the hospital. The next couple of days the tests revealed that she had advanced pancreatic cancer. This was devastating news which Eileen couldn’t accept. The two friends embraced each other and cried openly for this upsetting medical diagnostic report. Rose couldn’t believe what was happening to her friend and vowed to be by her side at all times to support Eileen’s needs.
On an early Sunday morning, Rose visited Eileen at hospice care where Eileen was transferred from the hospital. Eileen received her faithful friend with an open embrace but emotionally crushed as she realized now that the end of her life was near… With teary eyes these two longtime friends began to embrace and reminisce their past…Eileen was anxious to be transferred to her apartment for the final days of her life. Her request was accepted by her physician and Rose has made the transportation arrangements.
CHAPTER 3
THE CONFESSION
When they arrived at home, Eileen’s demeanor had changed drastically. She was no longer infuriated with her ailing situation, but very peaceful as she by now has accepted her fate. The two inseparable friends had felt at ease and without any regrets as to what their destiny was about to change. For the first time in Eileen’s life she felt comfortable to talk about her past secrets and started to narrate her life story as if she was injected with sodium pentothal, the truth serum.
Rose was uncomfortable to listen to Eileen’s confessions at this critical time of Eileen’s’ final goodbyes hours. She wanted to keep Eileen’s memories as she had known throughout their friendship and had no intentions to hear her confessions fearing of any ramifications; but Eileen insisted and had the physical strength to expel from her soul the daemons of her past, the agonizing heart pains and her concealed emotions. She was anxious to admit her wrongdoings at the final hours of her life. She felt compelled to recount to Rose her extraordinary life passage, regrets and her most out of the ordinary invalidated accomplishments.
My dearest friend Rosie
she said, for all the years that I have known you, I have avoided telling you the truth about my past…I am so sorry for not being up-front with you, my faithful friend. Please sit next to me she said. as she positioned herself in her bed to make room for Rose to plunk herself near the edge of the bed. I have a lot to tell you and I do not know where to begin! For all these years I have been deceiving you and falsely exaggerating every aspect of my life to impress you and anyone who knew me. I do not understand why I was concealing my past? I had this notion that if I had revealed everything about my past I would have not been accepted as a decent human being. Therefore, I used my wild imagination to create impressive dealings which after a while I began to infatuate and believed that I was living a life which I had the power to design. I am so shameful about my attitude and my fantasies. Please forgive me Rose for not being honest with you. I do not want to leave this world as a bad person. I am so sorry to hurt your feelings of your devoted friendship. You deserve to know the truth about me. I want to confess and to reveal all my secrets to you.
I was never an Orthodox Christian not even an American citizen which I was always proudly announcing the status of my faith and my US citizenship. I lied to you and to all my close friends. My life story has neither truth, nor transparency, but an escalating angry ambition derived from my family’s demise that forced me to seek revenge for justice and fame. My blind ambition guided me to more failures, unhappiness and tragedies. I sincerely wanted to be loved and to maintain the status of my aristocratic family, which I never stopped yearning.
My birth place was Westminster, England. My conscience obliges me to reveal my past and my family’s history. My family’s life came in to an abrupt end during World War II.
The German fascist movement began to annihilate the Jewish people from all around the world. Eileen took a deep breath and with teary eyes continued with her story…My family met with the same destiny as six million Jewish people did. Eileen suddenly wiped her tears and changed to a more cheerful conversation depicting her childhood
