A SINGLE SPOTLIGHT, CENTRE STAGE. DARREN HUENEMANN SITS ON A CHAIR, STARING STRAIGHT OUT. HE IS IMPASSIVE. HE IS EIGHTEEN, SMARTLY DRESSED AND WELL-GROOMED.

VOICE OF CLERK

Foreman of the jury, have you reached your verdict?

VOICE OF FOREMAN

Yes, we have. On count one, we find Darren Charles Huenemann guilty of the first-degree murder of Doris Leatherbarrow. On count two, we find Darren Charles Huenemann guilty of the first-degree murder of Sharon Huenemann

A GRIEF-STRICKEN SOBBING ARISES

VOICE OF JUDGE

Darren Huenemann, are you  ready for sentence?  Do you wish to say anything?

DARREN

(He rises. In a thin, adolescent voice)

My Lord. Whatever this court, and whatever this jury may say, I am not guilty of the charges against me. I have no anger. All I find is a hurt, a deep scorn, that I could do such a thing. And even though they may take away my freedom, my liberties, my rights, and basically myself, I will always have memories of Mum and Gran to cherish. I thank you, my Lord, and this court for a speedy verdict

VOICE OF JUDGE

Darren Huenemann, I sentence you to imprisonment for life without eligibility of parole for 25 years of your sentence. Court dismissed.

PAUSE

DARREN

Fuck this court!

THE SOBBING RISES IN INTENSITY.

ENTER CALIGULA, ROMAN EMPEROR.  HE IS TWENTY-FIVE AND AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS POWER.  HE IS DRESSED IN ROBES.  HE GLANCES AT DARREN.
