    Many people in this area were very angry because the Confederate Army had come into Kentucky. They started joining the local militia, better known as the Home Guard. The Union recruitment camp in Barbourville was signing up men from Eastern Tennessee and Eastern Kentucky for the Union Army and this camp was called Camp Andy Johnson.

    It was named for Senator Andrew Johnson of Tennessee. The camp was located near where Union College now stands.
