Chapter One: Mrs Prickles reports a crime

It had been warm for October and Mrs Felicity Prickles was late going to bed for the winter. She was curling up comfortably in the pile of leaves in the corner of old Grandad Gordon’s allotment when she heard a noise.

What, the hedgehog thought to herself, are people doing here at this time of night?

She unrolled herself and crept quietly through the leaves until she could poke her nose out. The beam of a torch shone through the dark and she could just make out two figures creeping stealthily past the runner beans and broccoli until they came to the pumpkin patch. Here was Grandad’s pride and joy; the wonderful large orange fruits that he grew for the children of the village to carve into lanterns for Hallowe’en.

Mrs Prickles frowned. Surely someone wasn’t going to steal one?
