THE INTREPID EXPLORER
Chapter 1 the morning run
Andy decided to take his quick jog to the corner market to get a bottle of milk, like he did every other morning when the milk was gone, so he could have some milk with his cereal for breakfast and to get some exercise in before he went to class. He had about an hour to play around with, because classes didn’t start until 9:00 am, he figured, so he hurried.
He jump out of bed rinsed his face off with a hot cloth towel, then put on his running shoes and started out the door and off down the street; running for about a block. Andy stopped the timer on his sports watch because he noticed a late model van parked on the opposite side of the street. It was just sitting there with the motor running; just sitting there looking all out of place for some reason.
Since Andy grew up not too far from his little apartment where he lived now, he was very familiar with the neighborhood and the people in it. Andy knew almost everyone on his block and even some of the kids around the corner. He knew what type of vehicles their parents drove and he pretty much knew all the cars that should be parked on the street. It was especially obvious to Andy when there was an odd looking out-of-place van parked on the side of the street that was marked, ‘no parking Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 7:00 am and 12:00 pm for street sweeping.’
Andy had never seen this van before, another reason he notice the suspicious vehicle. Was because it reminded him of the television show the A-team and the van that they drove? There was a remarkable resemblance between the two, but this van had some slight differences. The A-team van was brown with stripes and this one was tan with tinted windows, but still it reminded him.
Andy decided not care about it anymore and kept heading to his destination, the store was not much further, plus it was not his ticket the van was going to get for being parked on own the wrong side of the street. When he got a little closer, he could see that there were two guys in the front seats and that the one in the driver’s seat was smoking a cigarette. Andy was on the driver’s side of the van.
Just when Andy was close enough and in the driver’s line of sight, the man sitting there rolled down his window about half way; just enough to blow smoke out and to show half of his face. When Andy reached the hood of the van, the man asked him, Hey, excuse me, excuse me. I’ve seen you some where before haven’t I? What is your name?
After noticing the half rolled down window and kind of thinking this guy was acting kind of odd, Andy decided not to stop, but he did give a kind of a glance at the guy as he kept walking. He said to the short haired guy, My name is Andy. You might have seen me on campus somewhere, I go to UNC.
He gloated thinking this type of person wouldn’t know anything about what it means to go school to better himself, let alone anything about such a prestigious school like the University of North Carolina, so he said it with such authority.
The guy looked at him out the corner of his eye and said, Nah my mistake.
He flicked his butt out the window, and there were no more words exchanged.
Andy was nearly at the store now, not but two house lengths from the market, when he sensed the van had pulled away from the curb, and made a quick u-turn, before he had enough time to think the words how strange. The van was at Andy’s side and the door slid open. Out came two men in black sweat suits with masks over their faces. They jumped him before he knew it. He had not noticed the two men in the van. They strong-armed and grabbed him.
Uncertain of what was going on, Andy was scared. His knees buckled out from under him, which made their task much easier. One of the guys put a black bag over his head and told him to just come along quietly, and if he did, everything would be fine. Andy could not even muster up an OK, or an alright I’ll go quietly. He was in shock. The only thing he was thinking was, please don't kill me, as they lifted him and threw him face down in the back of the dark van with no back seats. Oddly, that reminded him of
