Introduction
This is a selection of poems from a largely unpublished small body of work, most written when I was in my late 70s and early 80s. Tstructure-next8 are not in exact chronological order, but where I could, I added the approximate date. I view this work as a poem-based autobiographical voyage.
I wrote the first poem, The Impossible, for an English assignment when I was a 14-year-old high school sophomore. In it, I speak of attempting to free myself from conventional life. But that’s not what I was actually doing. I was in fact a conventional kid living a conventional life, having conventional goals…a girl friend…a position on the high school yearbook and newspaper, and ultimately a career; and puffing prematurely on a pipe. In Delivery, I described becoming a father ten years later, but made no mention of my joy and apprehension. Instead, I wrote a letter to the editor of a medical journal criticizing obstetrical care. To my embarrassment, I was later quoted in the Ladies’ Home Journal. Later, I won a medical student essay competition by vowing to not again publicly chide my fellow professionals. I won the contest but didn’t do very well on my vow.
I did very little creative writing in the next 50 years; not hard to explain in terms of busy personal and professional life. Then, something stirred, and here is the product.
Some of the following poems are preceded by introductions or have commentaries to provide context. The poems concern many areas of life, including personal relationships, health, and aging. Some reflect my mood, some are images I wanted to fix in my mind.
With regard to hats, you probably guessed it from the illustrations. I have worn many hats, both literal and figurative over my adult years. From the literal standpoint, I have worn fedoras, Greek fisherman’s caps, and a variety of Western hats. Tstructure-next8 have
