The Three Most Important Questions in Life
D’où Venons Nous; Que Sommes Nous; Où Allons Nous.
The French Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin inscribed these words across a painting canvass on the island of Tahiti in 1897. Gauguin considered this painting his masterpiece; the total summation of his life. Where Do We Come From? Who Are We? Where Are We Going?
The painting depicts a group of human figures, all Tahitian, spread across a blue tinted landscape. Each figure is engaged in an important life moment.
On the right, three women huddle around a baby. They symbolize birth. In the center, stands a man picking an apple, next to a seated woman eating an apple. They symbolize the Biblical story of Adam and Eve and their quest for knowledge. On the left, an old lady awaits her death. In the background, a Hindu idol hovers over the landscape, representing the world beyond. Collectively, the figures invite us to contemplate the three most important questions of life inscribed across the canvass.
Gauguin commented: I shall never paint anything better, or even like it.
Gauguin even declared he would commit suicide upon completing the painting. One month after finishing the painting, he hiked into the mountains, poisoned himself with arsenic, and waited for ants to devour his body. When Gauguin failed to die, he returned home, and lived until his death in 1903.
Astrophysicists tell us the entire universe exploded into existence 14 billion years ago with a Big Bang.
They also tell us the universe gave birth to the planet Earth 4.5 billion years. The first life forms appeared on Earth 3.5 billion years ago. Our first human ancestors emerged 6 million years ago. We began using stone tools 2.8 million years ago. 10,000 years ago, ancient hunters and gatherers tamed the four elements of life: Air, Land, Water, and Fire. 13,000 to 5,000 years ago, humans domesticated animals and plants.
Today, we live and work in concrete and steel skyscrapers that kiss the clouds; soar one mile above Earth in air conditioned cabins at 700 miles per hour; walk upon the Moon; and drive rovers on Mars. We transmit television images to every living person on Earth; talk on cellular telephones to anyone we want, anywhere we want, anytime we want; and access information on computer monitors containing over 5 billion pages of information. We transplant human hearts and limbs; make blind people see and deaf people hear; and resuscitate people after their breathing and hearts have stopped for 7 hours.
We have courageously mastered all these miracles of life, yet the 3 most important questions in life still elude most people: Where did we come from before our birth? Who are we? Where are we going after our death?
The answer to these 3 questions teaches us how to choose a life of consistent happiness, good health, abundant money, and Godly love.
I wrote this book for three main reasons. First, I want to stay focused on what’s truly important in my life. Second, I want to be a good father, mentor, and friend to my twin teenage sons. Third, I want to give something to the world that has given me so much. You might call my book: My Personal Life Manifesto.
I also wrote this book to share the natural humor I enjoyed with my twin sons between the ages of 5 to 10 years old. By natural
humor, I mean humor my boys never intended, but which they innocently shared during our conversations and lives together, just like other children their age do with their parents. Children are so witty and charming at times. I still smile and laugh at all the crazy stuff they said. I hope you smile and laugh too.
Noah: "Why are black ants good, and red ants bad?
Dad:
Check out these ants. Their bodies are half red and half black. Are those good ants or bad ants?"
Noah: Hmmm. Well, I guess they’re half good sometimes, and half bad sometimes.
Learn to Live in the World
Dad: "Noah, when Connor stuck his finger in the light socket, what did he first tell you that happened?
Noah: Ouch!!!
At age 19, I read: The Sun Also Rises,
which was the first novel written by the American Nobel Prize winner, Ernest Hemmingway. At the time, I was devouring philosophical books by Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Russell, and Sartre, in the hope of understanding the world and my place in it. I needed a break from these heavy hitters, and began reading Hemingway’s novel about ex-patriots traveling from Paris, France to Pamplona, Spain to watch the bullfights and running of the bulls, and drink wine, and live in the present moment with intense passion and desire.
One passage from the novel left the Philosophers behind in the dust. From this single passage, I reinvented myself by changing all my life values and beliefs. The passage goes something like this: we need not know what the world is all about in a religious or philosophical sense. We only need to know how to live in the world in a practical sense. If we understand how to live in the world, we will know from that what the world is all about.
I wanted to hammer this passage deep into my psyche, so it would live within me forever, so I wrote a short story entitled: The Original Superman.

Connor, while playing poker: Hey, Dad, Noah just saw your cards.
Dad: "Hey! How’d you do that?
Noah: Very easily.
Create an Awesome Lifestyle
Dad: What’s your favorite baseball position?
Noah: Shortstop! There’s plenty of action.
Connor: Catcher, because you get to sit down.
There are five powerful tools to help us live in the world.
With these five tools, we can create an awesome lifestyle: Consistent HAPPINESS; Good HEALTH; Abundant MONEY; and Godly LOVE. Don’t just have a nice day; make a nice day!
Values: We can choose our Values. We must ask our self: What is important to me? We must tell our self: I choose what is right and wrong for me. Values are your own private, personal, individual beliefs about what is most important in your life. My life values are happiness, health, money, and love.
Beliefs: We can choose our Beliefs. We must ask our self: What are my guiding life principles? We must tell ourselves: I choose the meaning and direction of my life. I am special, everything is possible, there are no limitations. I am responsible for everything in my life. There are no failures in life, only learning experience. Whatever doesn’t kill me only makes me stronger. I choose my destiny.
State: We can choose our State of mind and emotions. We must ask ourselves: How should I think, feel, look, and act? What States will get me what I want, and take me to my chosen destination? We must tell ourselves: I choose an abundant consciousness, not a poverty consciousness. With the power of my mind, I choose to focus on the positive aspects of my life, instead of the negative aspects of my life. I choose positive questions that motivate me, that take me where I want to go, instead of negative questions that de-motivate me, that take me where I don’t want to go. With the power of my mind, I choose my emotions and feelings. No one can make me feel inferior or depressed or self-defeated, except myself. Whenever I want, I can choose to push myself beyond my comfort zone to achieve an awesome life. With the power of my mind, I choose my facial expressions, my body posture, how I stand and walk, and how I breathe. I choose my diet, exercise, stress, and physical health. With the power of my mind, I choose positive and healthy communications and interactions with other people.
Actions: We can choose our Actions. We must ask ourselves: What actions must I take to achieve what I want? What must I do to be successful? We must tell ourselves: I choose positive daily action that takes me where I want to go. I perceive and learn from the results of my actions, remain flexible, and change my actions when necessary. I stay totally committed to my actions until I achieve my plans and goals.
Ultimate Success Formula: We can create an extraordinary lifestyle. I choose my dreams: I discover my passions, what I love to do, what I want for my life. I choose a plan for my dreams: I create my goals, find a mentor, model excellence, and learn how to accomplish my goals. I choose actions that will achieve my dream: I pursue positive daily action that takes me exactly where I want to go. I perceive the results of my actions: I learn from my experiences, my frustrations, and mistakes. I stay flexible, and change my actions when necessary. I enjoy the journey. I remain committed to my dreams: I stay focused on my plans and goals, on exactly what I want, and never give up. Never!
With these five powerful tools, we can not only create and maintain a good lifestyle for our self, we can create and maintain an extraordinary lifestyle beyond our wildest dreams. By using these tools, we can summon the Law of Attraction, and thus harness the total power of the entire universe for our life. We must never tiptoe safely to our death. We must live the life we ought to live.
Connor: The high diving board at the swimming pool is way safer for me now since I’m only seven, compared to when I’m a teenager.
Dad: How is that?
Connor: Well, when I’m a teenager, it will be much more dangerous, because I’ll be taller, and farther away from the water below.
No One Can Stop Us, No one!
Dad: You did an outstanding job up there on stage today at your Kindergarten graduation ceremony. You looked so serious and confident, and you didn’t let anyone in the audience intimidate or bother you.
Noah: Thanks, Dad, but I just felt really scared and shy. That’s probably why.
Let’s never allow other people’s opinions to damper our life. Let’s never live according to other people’s view of our self. What others say about us, tells us more about them, than it does about our self.
The 19th century naturalist writer, Henry David Thoreau, said it perfectly: If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away.
When I was a child, I never cared what other people thought about me. I often wore cheap tennis shoes, unmatched clothes, and weird haircuts, and I was still happy. When I was teenager, I really cared what other people thought about me. I wore Keds tennis shoes, Levi jeans, and hip long hair. I looked exactly like my peers. When I turned 50 years old, I no longer cared what other people thought about me, just like when I was a child. People over the age of 70 tell me that no one, except their family and closest friends, really cared about them in the first place.
Our time is limited on Earth. We all share a common destiny. We all grow old and die. Therefore, while we’re alive, we must surround ourselves with positive people who support and empower us, and we must take the high road whenever negative people criticize and condemn us.
I remember standing beside two cute young girls at a P.F. Chang’s restaurant bar. They caught me glancing at them.
Disgusted, one girl remarked: You’re really old!
I took the high road: But I’m still your hero, right?
She scoffed: How can you be my hero?
Well, I’m everything you want to be. I’m your ultimate goal in life. I am a survivor. You want to perish in a car or plane accident? You want to be diagnosed with terminal cancer? You want to lose your life in a war?
No, of course not.
Well, then your ultimate goal is to be just like me. You want to live a long and healthy life with financial security and love. I am your hero.
Both girls found my words rather macabre. They clearly didn’t enjoy my speech, so they turned their heads away, and continued chatting and laughing together as if we never spoke. That was perfectly fine with me, since my friend had arrived and asked me to order her a drink.
No one really wants to die. Even people who believe they’ll go to heaven someday and be with God don’t want to die to get there. Death is a destiny we all share. No one, not even Jesus of Nazareth, has escaped death. And that’s the way it should be, because death is really our greatest blessing. All life is change. Life clears away the old to make room for the new. We might be new today, but we will be old soon to make room for the new. As one songwriter nicely summed it up, All leaves must fall from the tree.
While we’re alive, we must surround ourselves with people who support and empower us, and eliminate false friends who claim to love us, but really want to harm or destroy us. Great friendships are priceless. Friends can lift our spirits, make us laugh with tears of joy, be there for us like a bridge over troubled waters. But friendship can also be tricky business. One day our relationship is running smoothly on all 8 cylinders, while the next day the radiator overheats, and we feel betrayed.
The marvelous story of the frog and the scorpion show us how to own
this belief:
One day, a frog stood along the edge of a pond. A scorpion arrived and propositioned the frog.
"Hello, Mr. Frog. I need to get to the other side of this pond, and I cannot swim. Would you allow me to ride on your back, while you swim to the other side?
The frog hesitated. "But you might sting me when we’re half way across the pond, and then I will drown and die.
The scorpion smiled. "I would never do that. Stinging you would not be in my best interest. We would both drown and die together.
The frog thought for a moment, and then agreed. Alright, Mr. Scorpion. Hop on my back. Let’s go.
When they were half way across the pond, the scorpion stung the frog, and they both started to drown.
I don’t understand,
cried the frog. "You said you would never sting me. Now we’re both going to drown and die. Why did you do that?
The scorpion grinned widely. Because I am a scorpion, that’s why. Scorpions always sting other frogs whenever possible.
We have all played the role of the frog during our lives by helping family, friends, and other people. Most of us have met some scorpions too. As young children and teenagers, we had peers who promised us lasting friendships, only to betray us. As adults, we had false friends who gossiped and ridiculed us.
We should eliminate false friends from our lives. We can know who our true friends and false friends are by asking our self: Is this someone who supports me, motivates me, empowers me, and takes me in the direction I want to go?
If so, we should give our true friend our time and attention and love. If not, we should give our false friend a polite goodbye.
PART I
WHO ARE WE?
What Exists Besides the Known and Unknown
Dad: How do you feel Connor after losing the Monopoly game?
Connor: I feel like I’m the second place winner!
Back in college, I had an English Professor who lived a Beatnik lifestyle: French Beret, go-tee mustache and beard, and a white oxford button down shirt with blue jeans. On our first day of class, he wrote a question on the chalkboard: What exists beside the known and unknown?
Everyone remained silent. No student knew the answer. The Professor grinned and declared: The Present. The Past is known, the Future is unknown, and between the Past and Present exists the Present.
My Professor went on to construct our entire course upon this theme: the eternal now. He taught us to learn from our Past; live in the Present; and plan for our Future.
Gauguin’s painting mirrors my Professor’s simple words of wisdom. Where do we come from?
contemplates the Past. Who are we?
contemplates the Present. Where are we going?
contemplates the Future.
The second question, Who are we?
speaks directly to our daily lives right here and now, at this very moment, today. So let’s begin our journey with Who are we?
The answer is simple. We are living, thinking, feeling, acting, spiritual beings who deserve four blessings every day of our lives:
Happiness: Pure joy, satisfaction, and contentment, with an ultimate life purpose;
Health: Energy, stamina, and mental and physical pleasure, with absence of pain;
Money: Financial security and independence; and
Love: admiration and respect, love our self and others, and be loved by others.
These are my four life values; what I live each day for. I invite you to join me.
Dad, just getting out of bed: Why are you up so early, Connor?
Connor: I couldn’t sleep anymore. Ahhh, just to tell you, Dad.
Dad: Yea?
Connor: You don’t look that good in those underwear.
CHAPTER I
HAPPINESS
Happiness is our Unalienable Right
Dad: "Do you guys ever remember your school closing down because there was too much snow?
Noah: No, never.
Dad: Me neither.
I always believed I had a moral and legal right to be happy; that happiness was a fundamental right given to us by God. But I didn’t know why, or how to prove it. Then I came upon a U.S. Supreme Court case in my Constitutional Law School class. The case quoted the 18th century English Philosopher John Locke, commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism. In his famous work entitled,
Two Treatises of Government, Locke wrote that all people were equal and independent, and had a natural right to defend their
Life, health, Liberty, and estate."
Most scholars today believe John Lock’s words became the foundation for the American Declaration of Independence, which reads, We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
The American founding fathers had simply replaced estate
with the pursuit of happiness.
Wow! Beginning on July 4, 1776, America officially declared what I believed all along: We have a moral and legal fundamental right of happiness endowed by our Creator, almighty God in heaven.
Dad: What would you guys like for your Birthday?
Noah: A cell phone.
Connor: To be able to look at bad websites!
The Highest Goal in Life
Dad, watching Connor change the t.v. channel with a remote control: "You guys have no idea how easy your lives are today.
Connor: What do you mean?
Dad: When I was a boy, I had to walk 10 feet through thick shag carpet to change the television channel.
What is the highest goal in our life? Some people might say:
Well, I want to be a millionaire; or
I want to be powerful and famous and rich; or
I want a beautiful and loving wife and children, and a wonderful home; or
I want to travel the world for the rest of my life; or
I want be healthy every day."
No doubt, all these goals are admirable. They all help create a successful lifestyle. But are they really our highest
goal in life? Let’s look deeper. Whether our goals are personal, social, spiritual, or material, they all involve a means
toward one end,
which is happiness.
For example, let’s examine the person who said he wants to be a millionaire. Imagine I handed him a suitcase containing $1 million. It’s not the physical cash that makes him happy. The actual printed paper has no value. It’s what he can buy with the money that has value, which makes him happy. Money is a means to achieve an end, and that end is happiness.
Money, power, fame, admiration, love, travel, and health are all simply different means to achieve one ultimate desired end, which is happiness. We should never confuse means
with ends.
That is precisely what happened to a very dear friend of mine. Let me explain.
I once had a friend who drove a mail delivery truck for United Parcel Service. He earned big money, but he seemed unhappy. I asked him one day if he enjoyed his job. He told me he loved the subject of History, and he possessed a bachelor’s degree in the subject. He wanted to pursue a master’s degree program, but became distracted when he fell in love, got married, and had a child. He and his wife purchased a large home, two German automobiles, a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, and lavish home decorations and furnishings.
Suddenly, one day, my friend realized what happened to his life. He felt trapped. Yes, I earn an excellent salary,
he told me, but it all goes to paying our monthly bills. How can I ever go back to school? I will never obtain my masters degree. I will never live my ultimate dream of becoming a History professor. I am doomed to live a boring job that takes me nowhere; that gives me no personal happiness.
My friend clearly had mistaken money, which is a means, for happiness, which is an end. Money had replaced happiness
