    Preface

Lewis Swift became interested in astronomy at an early age and was particularly interested in comets. We understand comets quite well these days, but they were less well understood in his time.

Today we have sent missions to get a close look at comets and have even brought back samples from dust collected in a comet’s tail. Lewis would be excited.

Lewis Swift loved astronomy and used every opportunity to share his passion. Before becoming a professional astronomer he would set up his telescope in some public space and the local people would flock to look into the eyepiece at the wonders of the sky. Once he became a professional astronomer, he would still invite the public to view the sky.

He started in a small town and lived his last days in a small town. In between he lived and worked in Rochester, NY and in California. He was awarded medals for his discoveries as an internationally known astronomer
