The Basics of Discipleship - Pastor Fiona Lynch

    you.

Part 1 - How to Get Acquainted With God

    Introduction

This part of the study is designed to give the student some knowledge of God, His requirements of accepting him, and the necessary tools to have an in depth relationship with Him. Jesus is the chief cornerstone of our Christian lives; therefore without getting acquainted with Him, there is no foundation for your Christian walk.

First we will look at the subject title, ‘Who is God?’ Many people believe there is a God but do not know who He is or what He has done for them. On any new meeting with someone for the first time, to get to know them, our initial questions are usually, ‘what is your name?’ and ‘what do you do?’ This gives us an idea of what position and place they have in life. In finding out through scriptures the answer to these questions in regards to God, you will know who He is and what He has done and can do for you.

This takes us to lesson 2 of our study, ‘How to come before God’. Once we have acknowledged who God is and His authority and power over us, we will need to know how to come before him as this must be done in a specific way to begin a meaningful relationship with Him. Once we know how, and have accepted Him into our life, we can now have a life full of purpose and change in a new way. This will take time in getting to know God which takes us to our next lesson.

In lesson 3, we will learn ‘how to get to know God.’ This will take the student to a deeper and lasting relationship with God. You will learn how to communicate with God, about His expectations from us and for us and how to connect to Him Spirit to spirit enabling you to have a life full of meaning, from time into eternity.

These three lessons are designed to set the student upon the rock. The rock being Jesus Christ, so that they may have a lasting and meaningful relationship with God our father and have life eternally.

    Who is God?

    Lesson 1

Many people believe in a God, but do not know who He is. Without knowing who God is, it is impossible to relate to Him and have an intimate relationship with Him. We will use at Isaiah 9:6 as our key scripture. This scripture gives a clear definition of who God is.

    Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

We will now look at the 6 keys in this scripture which point to the deity of God.

    1. ‘For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given’

John 3:16 tells us that, ‘For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’

Jesus is given to us as a gift. He has been given as a Holy sacrifice to present before God to cleanse us of all unrighteousness, and to show us the way to eternal life.

Under the Old Covenant, (also known as the Old Testament), between God and man, any wrongdoings committed by any
