    CHAPTER ONE - First Day

I sighed deeply as I looked up at the school building; it did not look too different from my last school, but something about it felt so unfamiliar.

There was a strange sort of aura around the place; an air of opportunity.

The students were scattered around the courtyard outside the school, each of them drifted into various social groups.

I could tell they were all whispering about me, but I couldn't make out what they were saying.

Maybe they weren't, but my paranoid mind told me that was not the case.

My entire life I had always been a loser. I never seemed to be able to succeed at anything, and most specifically not being at all popular, but finally, I hoped, I had an opportunity to change that.

I was at a whole new school, with whole new strangers and a whole new start - I could really just create whatever impression on people I wanted -- or at least, that's what I hoped.

As I walked into the class, the teacher rose up and smiled at me. He was a middle-aged man with thick glasses and a moustache. His voice was aged and raspy, but his demeanour was welcoming.

Now, class, we have a brand new student! Taisuke Hayashi! He's just transferred here from southern Japan. Anything you'd like to say, Taisuke?

I froze on the spot as everyone's eyes fixed on me.

This was it. This was the make or break moment, where my position in the social ladder was on the total cusp of destruction or glory.

I-I'm just a... A cool guy. I stammered awkwardly, immediately realising how awful my choice of words was and cringing shamefully as I found my seat.

Nobody seemed to really care about my presence in the class. Usually when a new student joined there was all sorts of chatter and commotion about where he'd sit, what he was like, but--nothing: complete silence.

As the lesson continued, I started to have my eye drawn to a certain girl sitting in the corner by the window. She had long, jet-black hair, which was tied back loosely  into a ponytail, and a very delicate frame.

There was nothing particularly arresting about this
