About this ebook

Joseph Allen Owen lived up to his name as a “dog”. He was rude, inconsiderate, demanding, and a bully. He made sure everyone knew this was true when he left his pregnant wife as she was preparing to give birth.

Christina Veronica Owen was a strong Christian woman. She was raised to value family and to believe in herself. But her faith would be tested as she was thrown into single parenthood. Could she hold up to the pressure?

Joey and Christina’s worlds were night and day. The tie between the two was their son, Wade Mackenzie Owen. He was the one thing that both parents wanted. The difference was behind each other’s motive. Would this little boy be given to a selfish father, or a troubled mother?

The journey to the resolve is fraught with deceptions and secrets. Parenthood is more than just making a baby. Who was going to step up and put the child’s interests first?

    You Can't Buy My Son

    Chapter One

Joey was all the man Christina could ever want or need.  He took good care of her and gave her everything she could think of wanting.  Ever since the day she met him at their college senior year Homecoming football game, she knew he was the man of her dreams.  His dark hair and blue eyes swept her away.  But one day, something went very wrong.

It was late September in Connecticut, and the leaves were all brilliantly colored.  The air was cool and crisp, and the time had come for Christina to have the baby that she and Joey made together.  Christina had been experiencing sharp pains all that morning.  When she called for Joey, he did not answer.  She got up as slow as possible, not wanting to hurt herself or the baby, and walked into their bedroom.  There was Joey packing a suitcase.

Christina walked over to him, put her hand on his shoulder and smiled.  Oh, Joey.  What would I do without you?  She said this thinking that he was preparing the suitcase for her.  Except when she looked down, she noticed that it was not her clothes he was packing.  Honey, those aren’t my clothes.  They’re yours.

Joey simply nodded his head and continued packing.  I’ve decided to leave here.  You know very well that I don’t like living under all this stress and I most definitely don’t like living two miles from your mother.  Joey looked at Christina and noticed how she was standing.  What’s wrong with you?  You look like you’re in pain.  He said this with little empathy.

That’s because I am.  Joey, I’m going to have the baby.  Right now!  I need to get to the hospital.  Joey, don’t do this to me.  I need you here for this.

I’m sorry.  I’m afraid you’ll have to do this by yourself.  I’ve got to get out of here.  Call your mother.  I’m sure she’ll be flattered to ruin this baby’s life like she did yours.

Joey closed his suitcase and began to walk out into the living room.  I work with the public everyday, Christina.  I see women all the time raising their children on their own.  You’re a good woman, but I’m afraid I’m just not ready to be a father.  You and I have had some wonderful times together and I hope you remember that when you tell the baby about me.

At that, Joey walked out of the house and gently shut the door behind him.

In tears, Christina picked up her cell phone and called her parents’ house.  She was hoping her mother would answer the phone.  But, instead, it was her father.

Daddy, it’s Christina, she said softly.  I need to talk to Mom.

Todd Rafferty, ever- observant, noticed there was something wrong in his daughter’s voice.  Honey, what’s the matter?  Your mother isn’t hear right now.  What can I do to help you?

I’m in labor, and Joey got called out on a last minute buyers’ trip.  Can you come and take me to the hospital.

"Well, of course.  Why would he go
