About this ebook

“...my literary entry into the world of private surveillance, divorces, and literally, sex, lies, and videotapes.” —Elizabeth Lee Beck, high-profile lawyer who deposed Donald Trump
From If the First Lady Hired Me... I can’t predict where their marriage goes from here. In any individual situation, it’s unwise to guess. I do know, for solid certainty, that cheating IS the kiss of death to marriage and monogamous relationships. First Lady of The United States, can you hear me? If so, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Justin Hopson. I am a seasoned private investigator and retired New Jersey State Trooper. Please know that I’ve been chasing cheaters for over a decade now. In fact, I’ve had the unenviable task of investigating more than 100 divorce cases and have testified in a fair share of court proceedings. Infidelity, unfaithfulness, and adultery are too gentle of words, too proper for what they describe. Cheating is a better choice, much more direct.

What price cheating? Justin Hopson’s If the First Lady Hired Me… answers that loaded question in his book that is both a how-to about hiring a private investigator and a thrilling tell-all of case histories. If the First Lady Hired Me…is both riveting and disquieting. A must-read for anyone who suspects cheating. I couldn’t put it down.

Mary Alice Monroe, New York Times bestselling novelist

The more people that rationalize cheating, the more it becomes a culture of dishonesty. And that can become a vicious downward cycle. Because suddenly, if everyone else is cheating, you feel the need to cheat, too. ~ Stephen Covey

    Foreword

On April 21, 2018, I received an email from a Justin Hopson, which said in part:

As a … private investigator and retired New Jersey State Trooper, I’ve been following the Trump allegations very closely. Consequently, I am writing a narrative nonfiction book … A Private Eye’s Tell-All on Cheating in America. I am reaching out to respectfully ask if you’d be willing to write a short forward for my book…

Upon further reading up about Justin and his life path so far, I realized that he is a rare bird. Rare in that he is uncompromising with his actions when it comes to matters dictated to him by his inner voice, regardless of what authority figures order him to do, and obstinate in his moral conclusions, regardless of the personal gain and comfort that may come his way if he just tamped down on that quiet voice that he calls his conscience in Chapter 7. Perhaps we need more people like Mr. Hopson throughout the fabric of our society, and the fact that someone like him strikes me as rare is the problem.

I told him I would be happy to write a foreword for his book. He then emailed me a confidential galley proof, and thus began my literary entry into the world of private surveillance, divorces, and literally, sex, lies, and videotapes.

This was a fascinating read for me, because although I am an attorney, I do not practice family law, a subspecialty in law. I have had my fair share of high-profile cases, but the world of divorces is a different animal indeed. It is profoundly personal for those involved, and ropes in innocent bystanders, leaving them scarred, to an extent that civil cases generally do not.

Mr. Hopson’s book presents, in the context of marital infidelity, a choice that faces all of us in one way or another as we each go through this short sojourn on earth.

The choice is: can I do something simply because it is LEGAL? Does legality give me carte blanche cover to do as I please?

Posited in a slightly different way, the choice can be: if I can get away with it, should I do it?

Now, it can be many things. In this book, it is marital infidelity, or, as Mr. Hopson puts it bluntly, cheating.

    44514.png

However, as Mr. Hopson’s quote about cheaters, attributed to Andrew Keane, shows, we continue to hold on to this idea that cheating is wrong, and should not lead to reward.

Mr. Hopson, through his narrations of his professional life as a private investigator, gives examples of the fallout that occurs when people cheat. In a few examples, he goes into gory detail. The gory details not only describe what he is seeing and hearing as a modern-day gumshoe hiding behind restaurant menus and garbage bins, but also what happens when the cheaters get caught. As anyone who has been in an intimate, trusting relationship can imagine, the fallout is tremendous.

None of this fall into legality. It is NOT illegal to break your spouse’s heart and rend your family apart. Heck, you may even get away with it for years.

How is it wrong, if it is not illegal? Mr. Hopson states that it is a moral issue. He make[s] no judgments on the politics; what [he is] concerned about here is the message about morality. Chapter 1. According to Hopson, It’s a matter of human discipline, morality. Chapter 10.

    44490.png

Mr. Hopson couches his message as one directed to Ms. Melania Trump, our current First Lady. Her husband Donald Trump, the current President of the United States, is thrice-married, with children from each marriage. He has admitted to numerous extramarital affairs. None of this is illegal; he is presumably financially supporting all his many issue; but it sets a moral tone for the entire country.

It is interesting that this book is not a fire-and-brimstone diatribe against those who choose to cheat. I believe Mr. Hopson is too practical for that. Instead, it holds his professional observations from the trenches after a career in private investigation work after he fled his job as a New Jersey State Trooper (you can read his memoir about this in his previous book, Breaking the Blue Wall: One Man’s War Against Police Corruption).

He is deferential in his message to Ms. Trump, First Lady, but my takeaway is: perhaps it is up to all of us to rein in the cheaters, and stop enabling their behavior, regardless of any perceived immediate personal cost and suffering. And those who can do this best are those closest to the transgressors. Only then can we get back on the right track as a country that answers NO to both my questions presented above.

    CHAPTER 1

    No Limit

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a surveillance video is worth ten thousand thoughts.

    Justin Hopson

I closely watched as he shut the door behind them. He turned quickly and reached for her. The festivities were underway.

He took hold of her by the hips and pulled her into a tight embrace.

It was then that I saw his hands explore her body, lingering on her neck and down to her breasts. His left hand bore a gold wedding ring. If she noticed, it wasn’t news, or perhaps she just didn’t care. Like him, she was fully immersed in desire and gaining distance from ordinary inhibitions. Wearing a seductive smile, her lips inched towards his ear and whispered words of passion. Desire and endorphins were seizing center stage.

More and more, he expressed his appetite in a show of dominance. He squeezed her neck, she gasped, and her head snapped backward. Her long, brown hair fanned outward against the wall. She cracked a smile, biting her lip, as he squeezed even harder; I focus in on her arousal at the violence of his hands.

I then moved a few inches, changing my view, as the young vixen gripped the edge of the sofa and circled him. Closing her eyes, she let it all happen—his lips, moving to her neck and then below; his hands ripping at her blouse. In kind, she quickly began unbuttoning his fitted designer shirt.

Her fingernails now dug into and scratched his chest as she took control, pushing him toward the sofa.

I assumed the motive behind the scratch was twofold: first, a message to the man’s wife and second an expression of jealousy to the recipient—she didn’t want to share him. Whatever the case, her animal impulses were in full rage. The two of them continued to kiss every inch of either other, to explore, to scratch, even as the phone began ringing. The sound could be taken as an omen of warning, but it was too late for that. The couple just ignored it, their mutual desire angry enough that it must be quenched, regardless of consequence.

    I checked my watch.

By now, their clothes, in disarray or even tatters, were discarded and forgotten. He reached for her in the most intimate of ways and places, and she did the same. The foreplay itself might be a hard act to follow when the main event finally arrived.

I checked the camera, making sure the lighting and focus were on point and then double-checking the accuracy of the time stamp. It’s the surveillance camera that untangles the web of deception spun by a cheater, and it’s the private eye who is the firsthand witness to the cover up, which is often worse than the crime. I was filming for documentation purposes, not pornography, but it was essential to get the details recorded. As the lovers pursued every other part of the body, I cared mostly about the two faces. If they didn’t come through visibly, I’d be wasting my time.

With a gust of wind, the sheer white curtains lifted momentarily. The sliding glass door was open, and if either of them hadn’t been so utterly distracted, they wouldn’t have been so careless. Their misstep allowed me to film their every intimate move.

But she only had eyes for him, and he for her. Such is human passion. She took his hand, leading him to a table where the main course would be served. She struck a seductive pose—superfluous, of course, at this point— smiling coyly at him over her shoulder. He approached her from behind, and she reached down to guide him.

Once they were involved, I might as well have stepped into the room for a close-up without their noticing. Hell, I wouldn’t have even had to be particularly quiet—they were making enough primal sound to provide cover.

Not that any private eye would ever do anything so reckless.

Once more he took the lead, once more the aggressor as he flipped her body around and pushed her down flush against the tabletop. She cried out while they continued to work out the physicality of their adulterous affair.

Finally, given the limitations of human energy, the encounter came to a panting conclusion. They lay
