Take a Ride In the Sun - Michael Lough
Sometimes you just have to put on your Tophat and take a ride in the sun
Forward/Dedication
I would like to dedicate this book to your Grandmother.
And to all the women in your life
I know that is not normally how to start a book, but if you’re looking for normalcy, you came to the wrong place my friend.
PS:
Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Chapter 1 – Mundane Day
My day started like every other day:
I woke up – put on a pot of coffee – stepped out of my van and dumped a bucket of water over my head
After dressing, I grabbed my Bass Guitar and Thermos of coffee and headed off to the Office.
I decided to walk that day, so I really had to hurry in order to make my daily coffee meeting and get to work on time as well.
As I stepped slightly side to side to avoid elephant dung on the commute, I performed the expected routines and pleasantries as required by polite society.
Performing an obligatory waive to the errant clown here, the mandatory nod of the head to the top daredevil there, whilst scurrying out of the way to the dominant horse troupe (coming from ahead) while avoiding Camel dung, (coming from behind) all at the same time was just normal routine stuff to me now.
It was shaping up to be another ordinary day of drudgery in a Circus Band
Perhaps I should explain –
Remember dreaming as a kid about being an astronaut? ………. I never did that
Remember dreaming as a kid about being a Cowboy? …………. I never did that one either
Remember dreaming as a kid about traveling with the Circus and living like a Gypsy?
I did that one!!!!!
I’m that guy that actually lives in a van down by the river………………
(Grama is so proud)
You probably think that is super cool……………….. (And you would be (Mostly) right) 84.3% correct in fact.
But it’s not as exciting as you may have imagined while you were looking out the class room window in School
Living your dream is not always as simple as it looks from the outside
For some reason, Life always demands that it be more complicated
It was tough, but I grabbed for the ring anyway……………..and made it!!!!!!!!!!
TA-DA!!!!!!!
Not Lion -
I actually pulled it off ……………………
(I’m That Guy)
Nice to meet you -
Now that we know each other –
I hope you don’t think that I’m bragging just to make you feel bad…….
I’m not doing neither such thing
Perhaps I should explain –
Even though you never lived out your dream of becoming a gypsy in show business, we probably have more in common than you might think
In Fact; our lives/daily routines/etc.……… are probably almost exactly alike…….
Maybe just a couple of small things/finer points/just details……..
Just like you –
I wake up/shower/and put my pants on one leg at a time.
(Except... I shower outside with a bucket of water)
--------------- Add pic here -----------
Just like you – (a regular/any normal person),
I like to start my day over Coffee with a Trusted Friend and Gossip
(Except …. my Trusted Friend is a Lion)
Just like you -
I commute to work.
(Except …. I have to dodge elephant crap on the way)
Just like you …………….. I look forward to chatting with my colleagues at the water cooler.
(Except my colleagues dress code includes rubber noses and thongs)
Just like you …….. I have Friends that I think of as clowns
(Except that mine have diplomas from the esteemed Clown College)
Add link here
Just like you - I complain about the Boss
(Except my Boss is always packing a loaded pistol)
And just like you –
I complain about those damn elephants
(Their Noise at night) waking me up/and their well-known electricity habit.
Ok, ------- maybe that last one isn’t a valid example. (In your world)
But ……
But………..
But just like you –
I have Friends and daily rituals/routines (Mundane stuff) to do daily.
Day after Day after Day after Day – After Day
Just like you –
So you see?
I’m just like any other regular/normal gypsy/person/Freak/individual that Lives in a tripped out custom circus van down by the river –
Thanks to my Grandmother that is
That will more sense later
Trust me……
^^^^^^^^^^^^ That’s the outside
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That’s the inside
--------------------------------
And just like you - I get stuck in a rut sometimes.
Sometimes; everyday seems to start and end the exact same way.
My day always starts with my First Circus Daily ritual – Smiley and I (Meet for Coffee) One of the highlights of my day –
That’s my Buddy – Stage left of that Drummer Guy
And it always ends like every other day: Lions roaring in the night /Elephants trumpeting for reasons they keep secret from me.
But other than that, we’re exactly the same (You and I) ……………… (Just small details separate our realities)
See? We have a lot in common after all.
Look Around
We’re actually taking a trip around the Sun right now together.
The End –
Post Script:
Remember looking out the window at school as a kid and dreaming about becoming an International Diamond Smuggler? …………. I never did that one either.
No Thanks to my Grandmother that is
I know that that might sound weird, but that may or may not make more sense later on too…………………….
Not Lion……….
Trust me……
The End
PPSS –
Or Don’t - Whatever
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Post Script/etc./etc./etc.
The Show must go on…………..
Ready Kids?????????
Strap yourselves in
Queue the Band
Release the Freaks
"Curtain is going up!!!!!!………
Everyone ready to run with scissors?
Great! - Let’s go!!!!!!!!!!"

Chapter 2 - Uncle Grama
I want to make something very clear before we proceed any further.
I did not run away with the Circus. I drove there in a van that my Grandmother ‘tripped’ out for me.
I liked that Old Bird. She bought me my first Bass Guitar. She was always there for me and my siblings.
She raised all of us kids to be honest and always to be respectful to women…….. She would often say:
Be honest, use your common sense and common courtesy and always be respectful to women.
When I say often - I mean like (2000x) often. She liked to repeat herself.
Gramas – Go figure.
I was always her favorite; but for as long as I can remember, she enjoyed arguing with me more than the others. I swear; it was almost as if she was looking for a fight. (Probably because I was the youngest and probably because she almost always won)
Anyway, when I told her I was going to join the Circus and live in a van down by the river, she was supportive. And she was even very eager to help me pack...
What?
(That’s not weird at all) your Grama would do the same for you I’m sure. Helping you live your dreams………………is her job/duty/part of the Grama Code/Secret Play Book.
She even insisted on helping me equip my Van for the journey, and I appreciated that.
We selected the bed/dresser/etc. together, and we saw eye to eye on most all of the items that I would be taking for the journey.
But when we disagreed on (one specific item) that does or does not belong inside of a Circus Van, that’s when we locked horns again. (Just like the ‘good old days’)
A little background:
When she insisted on matching pillow cases/comforter/sheets/etc...(I was cool with that)
When she
