A Rough Hewn Cowboy
Synopsis: A Rough Hewn Cowboy - A woman decides to become a mail order bride but goes west under subterfuge – she already has a man lined up even though she will be supposedly matched up with a cowboy by the company who is paying her way. When she gets there, she can’t find him, so settles for an unappetizing but un-assigned man. Things do go downhill rather fast from that point onward.
Jordyn, you always get this way in the winter. You will come out of this once the sun hits the streets, you just wait and see.
No, I won’t. I hate all seasons here and I want to move to the prairies.
Now, you just settle yourself down and find yourself something to do, why don’t you go down town and buy you a new dress? That would make any woman get over the winter blues.
Jordyn had moved to New York to live with an Aunt when her parents both died with the fever three years before. She’d been sent to live with her father’s sister when there was nowhere else to go and no one else to take her in.
At seventeen years old she should have been satisfied with all the fancy dresses a young woman could have and young gallant men on her arm. Jordyn was not your average young New York lady. While other young women her age were thrilled with lavish parties being thrown on every account possible, Jordyn’s dream was her late father’s dream.
He dreamed of owning a horse and cattle ranch all his life and he would sit for hours and share his dreams with his little girl propped upon his knee. A banker had raised her father and the family came with riches and all kinds of treasures that played no part in her daddy’s heart. He had married into money as well and Jordyn’s mother was known as the Lady of the Ball.
Jordyn grew up beside all the finest of things and people and it had grown very boring to her, and if her daddy were alive today, she felt that he would do all he could to get her to the prairies. Her father had told her story after story that his elder brother had written to him about.
Her uncle had taken the leap of courage and had stepped out of the family’s fortune and he wandered for years until he was able to settle down on a ranch of his own and he had stayed in touch with her father through the years. Her father always envied the life that his brother had made for himself and he vowed that someday, he too would place his daughter among the prairies.
He, along with his wife, had come down with the fever and neither of them survived and his dream just settled among the noise of the city. Her Aunt had never understood her brother’s dreams and thought it was silly to sit and dream and she did not intend to see her brother’s daughter carry on like her father.
She herself had not been in touch with her other brother and was not supportive of him, his lifestyle, or his ranch. He had been long abandoned by the rest of the family and he was off limits to Jordyn. She did not even know if her father’s lost brother was still alive or not.
He ran through her mind constantly and all the stories her father would tell her, as he would read the letters. She had visions of prairie land swept away with beautiful tall grass as far as the eye could see, and horses and cattle grazing across fine pastures and this is what she had her mind filled with, as she would toil around New York City.
She detested the close living quarters and the silliness of some people’s lifestyles and she would often rebel as much as she could. There were times she would go shopping to only come back with men’s trousers and she would put them on and tie curtain ties around her waist just to see her Aunt Clara screech at her.
One Sunday morning Jordyn had decided to go to church even though her Aunt Clara would not be attending. She always tried to go on the mornings that her Aunt would not be there and it gave her a sense of freedom.
While at church the Pastor had read from his pulpit an announcement of an ad that had been placed in their quarterly and as he read the ad, Jordyn’s eyes opened wide as her ears perked up. As she sat alongside her best friend Margaret, she listened closely to every word the Pastor was reading.
It was an ad placed by a young single man who was in search for a bride. Jordyn could not believe her ears and thought it was very distasteful and how desperate he must be to run such an ad. About the time she was ready to discard it all and not listen any further, the Pastor mentioned that the young man lived in Oregon on a ranch.
The sound of Oregon
brought her fully to attention and she sat straight up. As Margaret began chatting loudly to her, she motioned to her to keep quiet and she listened to the Pastor. This announcement was meant for older single women and widows, but it caught the attention of lonely and beautiful Jordyn Steel.
She was twenty-three years old, so she was a bit young to be considered to reply to such an ad, but it was worth a shot. After the service she approached her Pastor and she asked if she could see the ad and as he looked down into her eyes, he told her "Jordyn, I can appreciate your curiosity about such an ad, but you are quite young to consider this and your Aunt Clara would have my head dismantled if I let you
