John Hudson's light and sound installation, "13 Souls in Search of a Light switch" presents both historic and fanciful characters searching for light in their lives. Here are ghosts trapped in a remote chapel, at times comical, at others horrific, sometimes explosive, sometimes resigned but all with one aim... to find a light switch in order to illuminate their situation. We meet physicist James Dalton, The Venerable Bede's sparrow, cosmologist Carl Sagan, artist Paul Gauguin, Alice in Wonderland, thirteen characters real or imagined.
The poems are interlaced with subtly changing refrains and the collection concludes with a transcription of an interview with John Hudson that took place during the Saint-Clementin festival in 2012.

John Hudson

John Hudson FRGS is a survival instructor, broadcaster, writer, public speaker and training consultant based in Cornwall, whose specialist work takes him to some of the most remote and extreme environments around the globe. A former RAF helicopter pilot, John is the British Military's Chief SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance & Extraction) Instructor, and an elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He's also been a resident survival expert on two series of Discovery's prime-time TV show Survive That – a.k.a Dude You're Screwed in the USA – successfully putting his own resilience to the test on camera in front of millions. The work was created for the bilingual literary festival of Saint Clémentin in the Deux Sevres region of France and installed at the chapel of St Ouen from the 31 August to 2 September 2012.

It uses a pre-recorded soundtrack of 13 poems, sound and light effects.

About the author

John Hudson is a widely published poet. His first collection, Medusa Muse, appeared in 1996. The Pumpkin Lantern, collected poems 1985 - 2003 followed in 2007. In 2009 he published the bilingual French-English collection Garden of Love. Earth, his collection from Luath, appeared in 2012.His most recent collection is The Road Taken which appeared in 2016.

John founded and edited the literary magazine, Markings, between 1995 and 2010, and he has edited

several anthologies. He was also a Director of The Bakehouse, a poetry performance space in Scotland.

Winner of three literary awards, including two SAC writers' bursaries, he has held writing fellowships in France, Ireland and Shetland.
