About this ebook

Charlie was an unruly, teething yellow Labrador puppy who caused his owner Anna more headaches than joy. No amount of exercise or training could curb his fits of unbridled excitement. Charlie's ADHD-type behavior forced Anna to look for answers and solutions from many different sources and got her to explore raw feeding and natural remedies more closely. Charlie set her onto such a learning path for the rest of her life. While Anna was searching for ways to solve Charlie's behavioral problems, she came face-to-face with her own negative behaviors and feelings. This personal journey took her somewhere even deeper, to the ultimate source of unconditional love. Charlie and the Love Factory is a deep, harrowingly personal memoir that introduces the reader to complementary forms of healing and the fascinating world of animal communication. This book will make a deep impression on the reader and get them to ponder more deeply their own relationship with their pets.

    Preface

    Dear Reader,

I am very touched and also proud to be able to write the preface to this warm love story between Anna and Charlie. This book you are holding in your hands can mean more than you even realize at the moment. Anna writes about scientific stuff, but in a gentle and captivating way. She touches on some extremely important everyday issues that pet owners have to face. In my work as an animal communicator, I meet countless pet owners who are in distress or uncertain about things regarding their pets’ behavior or health. Just as Anna writes, all the things she has gone through with Charlie in her own life, I see in my own work with a lot of people. We people wander around in a huge confusing jungle when it comes to our pets’ training, feeding and health and, in this book, Anna gives us many answers that can help every pet owner. Even if you don’t have any problems with your pet, this book can change your views in ways that will improve your pet’s health immensely. In this book, Anna emphasizes the fact that traditional medicine and holistic forms of healing can walk hand in hand in perfect harmony.

On my journeys, I have met many veterinarians who think very holistically, combining animal communication and homeopathy with energy treatments. Energy treatments have been found to have positive effects on the healing of people and animals from difficult illnesses. Having said all this, however, the most important thing in this book is the relationship between a young woman and her dog. Anna receives the greatest and most important gift from Charlie, and every one of us can find something similar in our own lives from different sources. I received the same gift from my horse. This book can help you to find this treasure by opening up so that you can be ready to receive your own gift when the time is right for you.

Thank you Anna and Charlie and all the other wonderful animals,

    Maiccu Kostiainen, Animal Communicator

    Living with a puppy

Charlie: "The home has to be clean. Anna is too concerned with cleanliness.  She doesn’t yell and scream when she sees some dog hair, but she cleans it up calmly and humbly (a visual image of a piece of paper which has been chewed into pieces on the floor).

A person must be meticulous. That’s Anna’s motto. She does what she has promised to do! She doesn’t give an inch; she does not bend. Sometimes her hairline tingles and stings. She rubs her forehead because she has once again promised to give too much of herself to other people and too little to herself. She’s too busy, I tell you."

    - Communication with Charlie

It was a sunny summer day, and we were on our way to pick up our puppy. I was over the moon because I was finally getting my own dog.  I had combed through Labrador Retriever breeders, but it was surprisingly difficult to get a dog from them. There are two different kinds of Labradors, those that are bred to be showdogs, and those that are bred for hunting. Hunting-dog breeders don’t want to give a puppy to someone who doesn’t hunt, and the breeders of showdogs want them to be shown. I didn’t plan to do either, so it was problematic to find a breeder who would sell me a Labrador puppy. But one day I stumbled upon an ad online that advertised a home breeder who had puppies, and the best thing was that she lived right next door to my boyfriend’s parents! What are the chances? I contacted her right away and she didn’t have anything against me having a dog in an apartment building. She didn’t think the size of the apartment mattered as much as the amount of exercise and activities the dog would get. When I arrived to look at the puppies, all but one yellow male were already spoken for. I told the breeder I would take that one.

When I went to pick up my puppy, I had brought with me a collar that was much too large and a leash. The puppy was very excited and chewed on my fingers constantly. My boyfriend’s parents’ older dog was suspicious about the new arrival, but my puppy didn’t mind him at all. We had planned to drive to my parents’ house which was a little bit further south, and spend our first night there. But our car ride was proving to be a true nightmare. As soon as I tried to put the puppy in the car, he started crying hysterically. He was beside himself. He calmed down right away when I picked him up again, but every time we tried to start the car and start driving again, he panicked and started crying again. We didn’t get very far without having to stop to comfort him again. I finally got the idea to wrap him in a moistened towel and put him in the footwell. There he calmed down immediately and started sleeping. We concluded that he must have been too hot, because the car had no air conditioning.

At my parents’ house, the puppy was admired and of course everybody wanted to spend time with him. I had already figured out what I wanted to call him. I had seen the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the name had struck a chord. I decided that my puppy was to be named Charlie.

The first night Charlie slept with us at my parents’ house. I slept in my old room, and Charlie was supposed to stay on the floor. We had decided that we didn’t want to let the dog sleep on our bed. He was allowed on the sofa, but no beds. Charlie cried many times during the night missing his Mom and siblings and trying to get us to give in and let him sleep beside us. I stayed strong and just hung my hand over the side of the bed to stroke him. It helped, and every time I did that, Charlie calmed down to sleep again. We survived the first night.

In the morning, we started housetraining our puppy. We took him outside often, and always praised him when he peed there. I started to associate the command pee with the act of peeing outside, and very soon it started to work. In his later
