Division I : The Light At The End Of The Tunnel

    Thursday, August 25th, 2016

    Southbend, Indiana

Are you ok, i-is anyone hurt? Dennis asks as he steps back in disbelief while the train of students finish exiting the tunnel. What’s happened? What happened to your face?! Do we need to call the police? Dennis decried.

We need to leave! Now! Connor declared as he slammed the door shut behind him and grabbed the lock from his uncle to seal the gate. Connor, and those with guns, took stances outside the view of the tunnel with their guns drawn on the egress point.

Guys, help me set up a barricade! he ordered. Try to stay out of view! he warned as he and the men of the group quickly began grabbing tool boxes and anything heavy they could find to place in front of the gate.

Once the blockade was finished they all stopped in place to see if they could hear their pursuers, their rifles all aiming at the mound. They stood still, quiet as they waited to hear what they thought was behind them. After a few minutes Connor snuck up to the pile of tool boxes to listen better, his gun ready. Taking a moment to prepare himself, he focused both his rifle and flashlight through an opening in the bars. Nothing. The group watched as he relaxed.

No one’s there! he said as he straightened himself. How sure are we that there was someone behind us or was it just panic? he demanded from the group. Robert, you were in the far back, yeah?! Did you see them? Ye-yeah, I mean, I was but…I…I-I don’t know. Robert responded. Connor huffed in agitation. Either way it doesn’t matter. he stated, understanding that it didn’t mean there wouldn’t be someone coming; he thought of what to do next.

We have to get out of here! he proclaimed as he made his way to the doors of the shack and closed them. "Wha, what?! Why? What’s happened?… CONNOR!? Dennis yelled in the midst of the renewed chaos.

The shout snapped him out of his focus. Connor whipped his head back around to look at his uncle. There was an attack on the school! he revealed. Whoever it was, it wasn’t who they were pretending to be. They…I don’t know, they somehow have the cops involved, or at least their dispatch. And they’re right behind us! he said. What does that mean? Are you saying it was the cops? Dennis asked. Listen, Uncle Dennis, I don’t know but they mean to kill everyone! I saw it, we all saw it! They weren’t going to leave anyone alive and they’re looking for us. We need to leave, now!

The sirens could be heard in the near distance. The noise made them all exceedingly stressed as they grouped together in fear.

Quickly beginning to understand the severity of the situation, Dennis offered his thoughts, I can only fit so many of you in my truck! I don’t think we should take the truck. Connor responded. Why, we’re not walking! They’ll find us! Jonathan interjected. Because not all of us can fit in the truck, plus its not going to outrun anything! Connor added. We need to stick together and sneak out of here, besides his engine is hot. If they can pick up our phone lines they can probably pick up a thermal image of a hot engine, it’s a risk I don’t want to take. he continued to no repudiation.

Turning to his uncle he inquired, Did you see anyone when you came in…do you think anyone saw you? Dennis replied hesitantly I, I…I don’t know…No. No, I didn’t see anyone and no one would’ve seen me! I came in through the back. I didn’t want anyone to see me, I-I didn’t want to have to deal with explaining why I was back so soon.

Connor ran to the door again and looked out then turned back to the group. We don’t have much time! As of this moment we’re sitting ducks. We don’t know who they are, we don’t know how many of them there are, and we don’t know where they’re at; we know shit! What we do know is we can’t sit around here with our thumbs up our asses. We need to leave this instant! If they find us they will kill every last one of us, I saw the rooms! We need to get to Rosedale PD over on Pendle and Independence. Connor said with certainty as he looked intently into his uncle’s eyes.

Believing his nephew Dennis thought quickly. Then go out the back. Follow the tree line. I’ll be a decoy! I’ll lock up and leave the same way I came in. They’re not looking for me, I’m just a groundskeeper. If they somehow stop me I’ll tell them I haven’t seen anything and don’t know what’s going on. I’ll tell them why I came back. Connor paused. Wait, you’re supposed to be on vacation. Why are you back? "I thought I forgot to set the sprinkler timer and Marty has been on
