    Tuesday, 23rd August 1939

    Dear N,

    How are you in Wales? The war is creeping up faster and faster here in London. There is talk of it wherever I go. The shops, the market, even the library!

    There’s also talk of evacuation. Well, evacuating the children. We’ll be going to the countryside where we’ll be safe from bombing. I don’t know who it’s up to, to decide whether we do or not, but I never want to leave, it’s where I’ve grown up for my whole life. My parents are here, my grandparents, my friends, my school, my quiet space.

    Is there talk of war in Wales? Will you have to be evacuated to somewhere safer?

    I rushed home as fast as I could. I grabbed the letter from my secret hiding place and dashed out of the house.

    I wish I could tell someone about my secret friend in Wales.

    I ran past the grocery shop, past the bakery, the smell of freshly baked bread warming my insides. Then the school and finally got to the post office. I leaned against the glass window to catch my breath, before stepping inside.

    I absolutely hated coming into the post office. But there was no other way to get the letters to and from N. Mr Miller was the strictest man I have ever known, yet Mrs Miller, his wife, was the sweetest lady! I don’t understand how they could be compatible. I went
