An Alien Prince for Christmas

Inormally love Christmas , but as I walk around downtown, I want to rip off every smiling Santa and ornament I see. When I come across a nutcracker with a particularly smug grin, I pause, my rage tempting me to kick at the figure and curse at it like it’s the sole reason for my problems. But I don’t want the people around me to think I’m a violent lunatic, so I force myself to continue walking.

Wincing, I clutch my chest, feeling a twinge of pain. My stupid, defective heart. Since I was a little kid, I knew I was considered fragile. Which was why I was always excused from gym class and my parents tended to hover around me like I was a bomb that would go off as soon as they took their eyes off me. All my life, I made sure to be careful, to not overdo it in case my heart couldn’t handle it.

But my caution turned out to be all for nothing.

Wait, what are you saying, Dr. Chang? I asked.

Dr. Chang didn’t meet my eyes. I’m afraid you only have a few months left, Sadie, he said.

Tears sting my eyes. How can I tell my parents that this Christmas will be the last one I ever spend with them? My mom and dad, who panicked if I got a tiny paper-cut and tried so hard to ensure I could be happy in spite of the limitations my weak heart imposed on my life? It’s going to break them.

I look at my watch.
