2020 has been the most intense year of most of our lifetimes. In an era of frequency manipulation, exponential technological advances, algorithms insidiously vampiring our invaluable attention to nourish monopolistic profit margins, and for better or worse the endless deluge of information from every connected corner of the globe at our fingertips - it is more important than ever to actually pay attention to these very fingertips.

To pay attention to our bodies.

To be at LEAST as aware of our own selves as what is happening in the world around us.

This year, my personal refuge and rock has been going ALL IN on my Self: my personal development and education, my spiritual practice and evolution, and the care and appreciation of my body in a world that can at times seem to most appreciate my body when it is in service to a corporate egregore.

I published The Ancient Art of Onychomancy in January. The next month, news broke of a pandemic in China. And we know what happened the month after that. Despite the global maelstrom that has since ensued, at the time of this writing I’ve sold over 400 copies! I never would have predicted that amidst such chaos, people would still want to know what I had to say about the divination of nails.

But I truly believe what I said in the introduction of that book: that observation and appreciation of each minute detail of our bodies can teach us so much about the state of our consciousness. And what I have come to realize in a very visceral way this year, is that this very observation is a form of love. We deserve that kind of attention and care, all the time and especially when the world seems to be falling apart around us.

While I did my best in writing Explorations in Onychomancy to present the information in a way that even someone who didn’t read my first book can understand, it does build on the foundations established in the previous book.

Our nails, whether natural or adorned, are a microcosm of our multidimensional energy bodies, and by studying the esoteric significance of each nail and each part of the nail, we can gain nuanced insight about the state of our consciousness in real time.

In The Ancient Art of Onychomancy In the Modern World, quoted above, we were introduced to the relationship between nails and planets, the meaning of each part of the nail anatomy, the meaning of each nail and breaks to each nail, the relationship between nails, astrology and tarot, nail shapes and personality types, the significance of your nail length, the basics of nail adornment, colors, and design symbolism, and common manicure problems.

I strongly recommend starting with these fundamentals so you more deeply understand the framework I am applying here.

May you cultivate and enjoy the nuances of your own beautiful onychomancy practice. Chapter 1: Nails & Elements

We discussed the four basic elemental shapes in depth in The Ancient Art of Onychomancy, but our abundant reality rarely, if ever, fits neatly into only one of four boxes. We are ready to explore the elements not just as static categories but as a fluid spectrum.

I am beyond honored to introduce to you the guest author of this chapter, anu omni, who has graciously crafted the most beautiful meditations on the elements that I personally have ever read. In anu’s words:

The first time I read anu's words, presented in bold italics throughout this chapter, I felt as if the spirit of the elements of themselves became more balanced within my own body as I grew in my ability to recognize and appreciate their nature.

I genuinely believe that one major reason I felt urgently inspired to write Explorations in Onychomancy at this point in time - when humanity is at this critical juncture of CHOOSING to either integrate more deeply with Nature or to splinter - is because Truth decided to teach us - my community who is reading this - about Our true nature through anu’s words, passed onto you through this book.

anu’s portraits of the elements are rich, nuanced, and layered - like poetry, I recommend reading them aloud whenever possible for deepest embodiment and comprehension.

In this chapter we will first explore the elemental shapes, introduced with anu’s interpretations of the respective element, and what they mean for natural nails and manicures. We’ll also learn some history of manicure shapes in cultures around the world.

Finally, we’ll close the chapter with my 3-step method behind how to analyze the fluid spectrum of elements found in alternative shapes, in-between shapes, and situations where different nails have different shapes - either naturally or due to your manicure choices.
