Day 1: Another sunny day in my village. After making breakfast, which really was some cake and milk, I headed out to the garden, ready to harvest. I knew that my husband and son wouldn’t be back from the mines for a few hours yet, so I had plenty of time to relax. My wheat was ready, as were my carrots and pumpkins. Too bad. I had been hoping for a better turnout, but there was time enough for that. Just as I was about to turn around and get back home so that I could hole myself in the crafting room for a while, the strangest thing happened. I heard a loud whinny, which was odd because nobody around here has any horses.
And that’s when I saw it. It was the oddest and yet, the most terrifying thing I’d ever seen: a zombie horse. Frozen, I literally couldn’t move, and in that split second, I thought of my family. That’s when I heard,
Hey! Bones!
along with a piercing whistle. Sinking to my knees, I nearly fainted, my heart threatening to leap out of my chest. Are you all right?
In the dazzling sunlight, I couldn’t immediately see his face, but his voice was kind. I still was in too much shock to move or even speak much, so I just sat dumbly on the ground until he helped me up. Are you okay?
I – I… think so?
I finally managed to say. My mouth felt as if it were stuffed with cotton, which is crazy because we don’t even grow that. Ha. Standing face to face with this stranger, I could now see him clearly. He was tall and thin, his face drawn as if he hadn’t eaten or rested well in some time, but his eyes were so sad that they touched me. What is that thing?
That’s Bones,
he said in a clipped voice, and I immediately noticed the tension, proven by a throbbing vein in his temple. Stepping back, I looked away. It was all too much.
When I looked back at him, I saw that he wasn’t paying any attention to me. He was looking around curiously at my garden, my house… and the shed that we use for our potions and some more crafting.
What is this place?
Um, our village?
I replied. He looked at me sharply, as if wanting to determine whether or not I was being sarcastic. I wasn’t. Where did you come from?
My own village.
That was an odd
