Chapter 1
The Royal City has been under siege for almost a fortnight. King Deusdedit and members of the royal household had been trapped in it. Their despondency and fear heightened by news of any further advance by the enemy into the Royal City. They feared for their lives. Parents could not hide their fear and helplessness from their children. Sadness saturated the entire city.
The Royal City had been totally surrounded by Commander Vermis and his hordes numbering several thousand. The plan has been to completely besiege the city and move in rapidly to the centre which is the Royal Palace. The battle plan had been meticulously planned for over a very long period. Every attempt was being made to ensure a flawless execution of the plan in order to secure total victory. The Royal City is the capital of the Kingdom of Almus which is one of the most prosperous and stable countries in a region of instability and poverty. An economic and military powerhouse, she ranks among the most prosperous and powerful countries in the world. Her military strength prevented armies near and far from succeeding in their desire to plunder her wealth. To the north of Almus is a thick virgin forest stretching over vast area of land. The sea is to her east while her west and south are bordered by other countries which are less powerful and prosperous than her.
Since the beginning the founding fathers had the goal of creating not only a prosperous country but a beautiful one. They painstakingly pursued this goal which has been kept alive to this day. Almus’ beauty is a combination of the very best that nature can provide in terms of beauty and the best that man’s ingenuity can create. Visitors are overwhelmed by her beauty and Almusians are proud of their inventiveness. Almusian women are not left out. They are exceptionally beautiful and admired the world over for their beauty. Almus is nicknamed the land of beauty.
The Royal Palace in which the King was holed up is one of the most magnificent palaces in the world. It sits on more than a quarter of the land of the Royal City. It has fifty three rooms and a theatre where plays are staged for royal amusement. The palace compound is completely walled. The walls are more than nine feet high. The gates to the palace are made of pure gold. Well kept green grass covers the entire front of the palace compound except where carriages and people pass from the palace entrance gates to the staircase of the palace which has been beautifully tiled. Exotic flowers which blend beautifully with local ones have been planted around the walls giving an awesome and breathtaking view.
Beside the foot of the palace stairs is a statue of King Decimus who is seated on a replica of the royal throne of Almus. King Decimus is the first King of Almus and a founding father of the Kingdom of Almus.
On the left side of the palace is a vast fountain. In the middle of the fountain is a statue of a big lion being ridden by a man with a spear in his hand. The tip of the spear is coloured red. The mouth of the lion is wide open with its canines clearly visible with water flowing through its mouth. Its bulging eyes stares threateningly at all within its sight.
On the extreme right is a pond with geese swimming in it. Doves, parakeets and some other beautiful birds forage for food nearby while the rest of the birds rest peacefully in the trees.
At the back of the palace is a big swimming pool. Swimming is a favourite pastime of the royals during the summer months. Further away from the pool is a stream that runs through the palace compound. It is saturated with fish of different species. From time to time the members of the royal household go fishing in the stream.
Commander Vermis was determined to make a swift and effective assault on the Royal Palace and depose the King from the throne. However, his assault strategy was not going strictly according to script. The Protectors and soldiers protecting the Royal City held their ground. They fought bravely much to the displeasure of Vermis. The message was loud and clear, the march towards the Royal Palace was certainly not going to be a cake walk.
The Protectors were the King’s personal bodyguards and defenders of the royal throne and undeniably the last bastion of defence. Throughout the two week siege the Protectors aided by loyal soldiers remained unperturbed in their objective of turning the tide. In spite of the numerous fatalities they suffered, they answered the horde back with triple their number of fatalities. To Commander Vermis this was unbelievable and unacceptable. He remained relentless in his course of action, believing that his military strategy still had enough teeth to bite the life out of his enemy.
The Kingdom of Almus was founded
