THE CYCLIC VARIATIONS
Certain variations from this cycle were published as separate poems (provided with titles) before the year-long-plus sequence was accomplished (TickleAce, Nos. 31, 39.) A condensed five-variation preview of the complete work (without titles to poems) was published in TickleAce, No. 33. One or two other variations (with titles) were published in The Newfoundland Quarterly, and in the anthology Voices from the Rock, Selected and Edited by Everard H. King, Harry Cuff Publications, St. John’s, 2000. Titles temporarily applied to individual variations, so published, have now been removed. They are replaced by the uniform and less distracting order of small Roman numerals. This is a more desirably neutral mode of identification for the components of the sequence, and allows each variation to speak directly for itself.
MORE NEW POEMS
Five recent poems have been published in The Aberdeen University Review (U.K.), Spring, 2004, pp. 240-42: ‘The Ahbutster’, ‘Fall Dusk’, ‘Entertaining Couples’, ‘The Sunshine on the Road’, ‘In the Park’. The poem ‘Verses’ was published with an accompanying cartoon drawing in The Newfoundland Quarterly, Vol. 91, No. 1, 2005, pp. 29. These poems are included in the MORE NEW POEMS section of this book.
The cover is a cartoon, ‘Spring Woods’, one of several dozen cartoons that Alastair created over the years.
Acknowledgements are given to the above publications and their editors, with gratitude for acceptance of my work over many years.
My thanks also to Dr. Helen Peters of Memorial University for her sustained interest, and helpful advice.
Thank you to Vanessa Stockley and Todd Manning. These two friends have been very helpful with proof reading of the book, and generally keping an eye on things.
And once again I am happy to have benefited from the computer services of Veronica LeGrow, with whose technical skills and accuracy I was already familiar.
For Clyde Rose and Breakwater Books, again my gratitude and praise for their careful and tasteful productions of many of my poetry collections.
