An adventure never to forget

US Marine Corps general Jim Mattis once said “there is nothing better than getting shot at and missed”, while Mark Boal, writer of The Hurt Locker, states that “war is a drug… a potent and lethal addiction”.

Certainly, I loved being on operations with the Royal Marines. There was rarely a dull moment; most days brought adventure and challenge in equal measure. Now I’m a ‘civvy,’ I know that I’m not the only service leaver who finds ‘civvy-street’ to be somewhat dull by comparison.

So I am grateful that pursuing wild birds in wild places has always held — and continues to generate — a sense of real excitement. Wildfowling is an adventure. I was reminded of this on a recent outing.
