Sophie

A grunt of frustration rips through my throat as I dig through my dresser. Over my shoulder, I chuck socks and faded blouses and ripped denim shorts.

Where the hell could it be?

Still hunting through the dresser, I turn slightly and inspect the rest of my jumbled bedroom while trying to swallow the panic thudding in my heart.

I’d been searching for over an hour already. My sheets are torn off the bed, closet pulled apart, and every drawer in the room has already been yanked open.

I’ve already wasted too much time. I know I should have hightailed it out of town, like, yesterday, but I just can’t convince myself to give up yet.

If I walk away... would I ever forgive myself?

Since my eighteenth birthday, when I turned my back on an overbearing father and a mother who bowed to his every whim, I’ve resented men who try to control me.

I refuse to be tamed, and that’s what makes this horrible incident ten times more excruciating. How could I have let myself get into this position?

The floorboards suddenly creak near the front of my apartment and a jolt of fear ripples through me. That’s it, then. My time is up.

I freeze where I am—still half bent over the dresser, one arm above my head, and a pair of lace panties I’d been about to throw on the ground clinging to my fingertips.

I listen as the sound of heavy, yet somewhat stealthy, footsteps make their way across my tiny living room.

At least there’s one positive about this mess. I’m between roommates at the moment. No one else is here to get caught up in the chaos I’ve created.

If Shelby were still living with me, this situation would be ten times worse. Thankfully, I only have myself to worry about. And that’s the way I like it.

Holding my breath, I creep carefully across the room. Though the intruder is trying, and mostly failing, to be quiet, I'm far more agile. Then again, it’s rather easy for me.

I’ve always been petite. Just a hair over five feet and slender but curvy where it counts, I’ve never let my small stature hold me back. Bedsides, my big mouth makes up for my diminutive stature.

Peering out from the crack in my doorway, I easily spot the hulking figure of a man making his way through the apartment. It’s a small unit, and he’s not far away.

I don’t know him, but I know exactly why he’s here. I skipped out on my bail, and this gruff-looking guy is here to collect me. I know just who sent him my way too. It had to be my good-for-nothing ex.

Abruptly, as though the man could sense me staring, his head jerks up. Golden eyes lock
