Hunting for Shelby (Alpha Recovery Book 2) - Mandy Morgan

    Shelby

I shift my cellphone from one shoulder to the other and shrink back into the shadows of the bus station.

A strong breeze billows down the street, but the gust is unexpectedly cool on this hot summer day. Above me, clouds have begun to swirl, their fluffy bodies tinged an ominous grey.

When I nervously wet my lips, I can almost taste the rain in the air. The faster this bus comes, the better…

Shelby, my roommate sighs into the phone. About damn time you called me back! Where have you been? I was starting to get worried.

I’ve been…around, I answer softly. I figure the quieter I am, the less attention I’ll draw my way.

God, why are you whispering? Are you in a library? I can already imagine Sophie’s pretty face all scrunched up with concern.

My roomie knows just how hard it is for me to be quiet. With flaming red hair, bright green eyes, and legs at least a mile long, I’ve never been the type of girl to slip under the radar.

And usually, I love that. Right now, however, it’s not doing me any favors. I wish I had a hat to hide my fiery locks. I’m not exactly prepared, but it wasn’t like I was expecting to be on the run today.

What the hell, Shelby? Are you okay? Like, you’re scaring me a little. Do you need help?

I bite my lip. Sophie has enough issues of her own to deal with. She doesn’t need to be dragged into mine.

I really need to go. I’ll be in touch later, okay?

    Wait a sec, Shel—

I hang up before Sophie can finish her sentence. Squeezing my eyes shut, I shove the phone into the back pocket of my tight denim shorts. When it begins vibrating not a second later, I switch it off entirely.

How am I supposed to explain to my roommate how much trouble I'm in? Especially when it’s my own damn fault?

I messed up. Bad. And there’s nobody I can blame but myself. Oh, well, it’s not like running is unusual for me. I’ve been running my whole life.

Running from men, from problems, from the thoughts in my own head. I barely stay in one spot long enough to catch my breath.

Down the street, the sound of bus tires squealing makes my chin jerk up. The large vehicle
