What would you do if your life took a sudden turn for worse? If everything you ever knew stopped existing? If the world you knew wasn't there the very next morning? This is precisely what happened to Tara Harris.

Before the world plunged into chaos, Tara Hariss had it all. She was engaged to a successful hedge fund manager, and she was about to be promoted at her job. But one fateful day changed everything.

Something unthinkable happened. Due to the terrorist EMP attack, the town she lived in lost all electricity. Chaos ensued. Terrorists looted the banks and stores, kidnapped people, tortured, and killed them.

But Tara was lucky to survive. Her fiancé, Nathan, hid her away into a bunker and ran out to save his boss. After Tara emerged from the bunker a few weeks later, instead of a lovely city she lived in, she found a wasteland.

Natan left her with instructions to reach a safe haven by boat. Now she is on a cross-country trip trying to survive in a new unknown world, with terrorists, pirates, and lousy weather nipping at her heels.

    CHAPTER ONE

IT WAS PRECISELY 5:00 pm at Tate HR firm.

Tara finished pitching PR strategies, grateful because she had nothing to do for the rest of the day. Between her ecstasy for a day well spent and a partnership position knocking at her door, she was both mentally and physically exhausted.

As Tara settled herself in her cubicle, she trained its direction to the window. Reining in streams of happiness, she stood up and looked out the window. There was a small garden outside garnished with some flowers. They looked purple, and the nectar looked sweet. Its heavy scent perfumed the air. It was an aroma evocative of Tara when Nathan proposed to her a few weeks ago with a diamond ring artfully wrapped in a beach flower. It transported her to the magnificent mansion he had bought for their habitation after marriage.

The scent of the flower was crept into the corners of the window as if trying to join in Tara's thought. How aromatic the smell was, to have helped her regained her energy.

Then she thought of it and she certainly felt that the odds were in her favor. She would get married to Nathan in a few months and promoted to a glorified position in her workplace at the same pace.

Eventually, my hard work paid off. Tara told herself.

When Tara snapped out of her thoughts, she pulled out her phone from her skinny blue jeans pocket and tried texting Nathan to come and pick her up. The text message didn't deliver as her phone did not have any network signal.  Tara didn’t notice it since she wrapped the phone in the pocket as soon as she sent the message.

Still staring at the flowers, Tara’s face was beaming.

Hey, Tara. Sasha, her cubicle neighbor, winked at her in a goofy way.

Huh? Tara answered as she ran out of her little smiling world like a dog running out of hell.

You have been smiling at the window for decades now, babe. Are you, by any chance, forming clusters of pretty mental images of your wedding day? Sasha teased, wanting more explanation from Tara.

Sasha? You better don't mess up with me any further. In a few months, I am going to be a super boss in this office. Maybe by then, you may have to write a lot of appointments before you can see me. Treat me well when you can. Tara poked at Sasha, immersing herself in chunks of faint chuckles.

Sasha said nothing in response to that, and Tara didn't push her either.  She only smothered a faint grin.  Tara knew that her jokes were pretty dry for a sarcasm freak like Sasha, but she had let her happiness for little progress overtook her sanity. Sasha had the same level of experience in the HR field as Tara, and to think that Tara was promoted first without any subtle consideration for her cubicle neighbor, it was actually a big blow.

At the thought of it, Tara segued from goofiness to sanity.

I am sorry, Sasha. I shouldn’t have been so inconsiderate with my stupid jokes. Tara muttered, hiding her gaze from Sasha.

To Tara’s amazement, Sasha brushed it off with a smile and gave her a warm pat on the shoulder.

Are you kidding me? Sasha asked her.

Before Tara could answer, she heard the sound of some footsteps in the stairs.

TARA RECOGNIZED THE sound of the footsteps sharply. It was the men who had traded their energy for business, the hedge fund moguls themselves. It was the men who knew when to care for their fiancés. It was the men who had a thing for picking their fiancés at work every evening. There they came, Nathan and Ken.

Ken was Nathan's boss in a hedge fund company, but they were good friends. Like Nathan, his face had hints of handsomeness as well as class. Their manly aromatic scent gave them an ultra perceptive attractiveness as they walked towards the direction of Tara and Sasha's cubicles.

When Ken threw a passionate kiss on the crown of Sasha’s right finger, Tara and Nathan settled for few talks.

Baby, are you ready to go home now? I could give you a ride. Nathan told Tara as he planted a kiss on her forehead.

I am ready, sugar pie! I wrapped up work so early today. Tara told Nathan as she winked at him, ready to move away with her dark handbag.

The moment the time read 6:00 pm, Tara and Nathan made their way out of the office space.  Tara hobbled along with him as he threw his hands over her shoulder. The couple was of the same height, and their complexion was not far off.  They chatted about how their day went, on their way to the parking lot.

Tired of the clichéd subject of a well-spent day, Tara changed the topic to the interior design she wanted for their future marital home.

Sweetheart, I have some chic ideas about our future home décor.  You know that I really want the best for us and our future kids. Tara told Nathan with a beaming smile.

Halfway to the parking lot, Nathan shrugged. I am not sure we need to talk about this, though. You know that I have great pride in your feminine choices.

Tara knew that Nathan always pulled that kind of turf whenever he was mentally exhausted. At that realization, she was wired to restore his vigor.

It chills me to the end that you can talk about me in this manner.  But I respect your choices as well. I don’t want to take you for granted. Would you mind checking some interior designs I saw on the Internet? I saved the page. They are so beautiful, darling. Tara told Nathan as she fished her cell phone out of her pocket.

Nathan’s lips curled back in a smile that was anything but pleasant. You just have a way of getting me to participate in the most important things, Tara. He told Tara with a calm tone, and it made her face flushed with a grin.

Tara tapped an Internet browser on her cell phone, but it didn't load. Her phone ran out of the signal.  After restarting it umpteen times, it wouldn't connect to the Internet. At this point, Tara chose to ignore it. Instead, she invested her attention on the handful of people propping themselves against their vehicles in the parking lot, fighting a wave of hopelessness after several jerky attempts of starting their car engines.

This looks so strange. Why are they finding it so difficult to move their cars? Tara asked Nathan as they edged closer to Nathan’s Porsche Boxster car.

Nathan’s lips twisted in thought, his eyes shifted between Tara and the distant crowd. He was thinking of something.

You are so good at switching topics. May I see the décor ideas you want to show me, sweetheart? Nathan told Tara, throwing a wink her way.

    "It is just too bad
